* The Anambra State Commissioner for Transport, Mrs. Patricia Igwebuike has called for a collaborative effort to make the Onitsha River port functional. The Commissioner who spoke during a one-day seminar organized in Onitsha by the Nigerian Shippers Council Anambra State Chapter highlighted the economic importance of the Onitsha Sea Port to the State.

* The Provost of Nwafor Orizu College of Education Nsugbe (NOCEN), Dr Justina Anyadiegwu, has warned the newly admitted students not to be involved in any sort of cultism, stressing that the College forbid the practice. The Provost gave the warning while delivering her address at the occasion of the 27th cum 43rd combined matriculation for Nigeria Certificate of Education (NCE) and Bachelor of Education(B. Ed) students of the 2023/2024 session, held at the College Arena, Nsugbe in Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State, over the weekend. Anyadiegwu, after congratulating the matriculating students, said that phone lines and email addresses would be provided with utmost confidentiality to report any form of maltreatment.

* South Eastern investors have been charged to look inwards to the opportunities in exportation rather than importation business. The Export Director of Denca Global Courier, DGC Express, Dr Onyinye Okpah stated this in Onitsha during a one-day seminar on “Cheap Dollars Made Easy, Export Now”, saying that exportation is more lucrative and beneficial to the Nigerian economy than importation. The seminar championed by DGC Express in collaboration with the Committee on Export of the Anambra State Ministry of Commerce and Industry is aimed at showing businessmen and farmers that what they ordinarily think is nothing means a whole lot in export and that what they need to do is to harness every opportunity, ensure their genuineness and think export, thereby earning in dollars.

* Diocese on the Niger, Anglican Communion, Anambra State, has celebrated UMTE candidates of the diocese who scored 270 and above in the just released result of the University Matriculation Examination. The event which held at the Calvary Chapel, Episcopal House, GRA, Onitsha, attracted parents and some of the teachers of the students including archdeacons of their archdeaconries. In a speech while presenting Educational Merit Award to each of the students, the Bishop on the Niger, the Rt Rev Dr Owen Nwokolo, explained that the gesture was aimed at encouraging the students for more exploits. He commended the students for their success in the examination and advised them to always take their studies seriously, reminding them that they were to face more academic challenges in their next level of education.

* The Chairman, Anambra State Post Primary Schools Service Commission, PPSSC, Awka, Prof. Nkechi Ikediugwu has charged Principals of secondary schools to perform their managerial functions effectively or be removed. She gave the charge while monitoring some schools in Onitsha, Nkwelle Ezunaka and Obosi. The schools visited include, Model Comprehensive Secondary School, Nkwelle Ezunaka, Community High School, Nkwelle Ezunaka, Washington Memorial Secondary School, Onitsha and Awada Secondary School, Obosi. At Model Comprehensive Secondary School Nkwelle Ezunaka, Professor Ikediugwu, who met the absence of the Principal, Mrs. Agnes Oraedu was taken round the school by the Vice- Principal, Mrs. Ngozi Mbaneso where most of the classes were with teachers but students were seen in three different school uniforms.

 

* The Vice-Chancellor of the University on the Niger, Umunya, Anambra State, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, has called on Anglicans to support education in all its ramifications.

Prof Nebo, a former Vice Chancellor, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and a former Minister of Power bared his mind on Nigerian University Education in a speech he made during the Annual Homage of the Diocese on the Niger held at the All Saints’ Cathedral.

He therefore expressed joy, as a welcome development, the eventual establishment of the University on the Niger, saying that it emerged at the nick of time.

* Chief Agbanari, Managing Director of Seaman Industries, owners of Seaman Rice Mill, Ndam village, Nnobi Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra has said the company is still conducting a test run of the factory.

Agbanari who was reacting to protest over alleged emission-induced environmental hazards by some people  living in the vicinity where the factory was sited. The indigenes had alleged that  activities of the factory  was endangering their livelihood due to toxic emissions from the factory.

* The Anambra State Government, in collaboration with the Office of the First Lady, has launched the 2024 Immunization Week with a focus on increasing coverage and achieving better results. The program aims to ensure that every child within the vaccination age (zero to fifteen months) in the state receives the necessary immunizations. First Lady Mrs. Nonye Soludo emphasized the importance of this exercise, urging stakeholders, including parents, guardians, schools, and religious institutions, to spread awareness and follow up on families whose children should be vaccinated. 

* The Obi of Onitsha, His Majesty, Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, 

has announced the appointment of Onwa Okechukwu Akpom, of Omozele kindred group in Umuezearoli Quarters and Ojinnaka Molokwu Azikiwe who hails from Inosi Onira kindred group in Ogbeabo quarters as members of his cabinet. The two new appointees are expected to join the monarch in the administration of the affairs of the kingdom. A press release by his Chief of Staff, Chief Osita Anionwu, Ike Akatakwuani stated that Onwa Akpom who is attorney at law was until recently based in the United States of America, while Ojinnaka Azikiwe, a finance professional with wide experience in the public sector, currently serves as Director of Budget & Treasury, in The ECOWAS Commission.

* The Association of Anambra State Town Union (ASATU) has approached the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) for a possible partnership on development control. This collaboration aims to promote sustainable development, protect the environment, and ensure compliance with infrastructural development standards to meet community needs. This was disclosed during a meeting between ASATU youth leaders and the Managing Director of ACTDA Mr. Ossy Onuko when the team paid a courtesy call to the ACTDA office in Awka. In his remarks the President General of ASATU Comrade Ken Okoli who highlighted the association’s role as a catalyst for community development and good governance praised Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo’s efforts in transforming Awka into a befitting capital territory, aligning with the governor’s vision.
