* Anambra Commissioner of Police, CP. Ikioye Orutugu has charged officers and men of the Command to step up surveillance and intelligence gathering to nip to the bud crime and criminality in the State.
Orutugu also urged them to uncover the circumstances surrounding a disturbing incident of a dead body, found hanging on a tree in a bush at Amichi, Nnewi South Local Government Area.
According to SP. Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Command through a press release,
information revealed that an unidentified person called through the deceased phone to report the discovery of the body hanging on a mango tree in a bush.
“The body has been identified and deposited in the morgue and efforts are ongoing to contact the deceased family for necessary action.
“The Anambra State Police Command is taking proactive measures to unravel the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident and to bring the perpetrators to justice”. Ikenga stated.
* Governor Chukwuma Soludo has condemned the senseless murder of Barrister Ifeanyi Iloakasia, a lawyer and President General of Aguleri community, who was attacked alongside his client on Thursday May 17, 2025 near Agulu-Nanka boundary area of the state.
In his reaction to the unfortunate incident after being fully briefed, Governor Soludo not only condemned the cowardly act of the murderers but also expressed his deep condolences to the family and friends of the late Barr. Iloakasia, as well as the people of Aguleri who have been devastated by this tragic loss of a man widely praised as a tireless advocate of peace.
The Governor stated that although this criminal incident might have understandably heightened concerns among the public, Ndi Anambra should be assured that the State Government is taking this matter with the utmost seriousness, working with security agencies to ensure that the fleeing killers are caught and justice is served promptly.
In a related development, Governor Soludo also acknowledged and commended the bravery of the state security operatives who thwarted an attack on the security checkpoint in Isuofia on May 15, 2025.
While mourning the loss of one of the gallant officers during the confrontation, it is however reassuring that calm has returned to the area, and security operations have been intensified to ensure the continued safety of our communities.
* Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Commander, Anambra Sector, Joyce Nnennaya Alexander has called for regular walking and cycling.
Comd. Alexander made the appeal while speaking during the thanksgiving mass at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Amawbia on Sunday, in commomeration of the end of 2025 Global Road Safety Week.
The FRSC boss emphasized on the use of sidewalks by pedestrians, obedience to traffic signals and avoidance of crossing between moving vehicles.
She revealed that the theme for this year’s event ‘Make Walking Safe, Make Cycling Safe’ reminds all of our shared responsibility to protect those who use our roads in the capacity of pedestrians and cyclists.
* Governor Chukwuma Soludo has expressed profound sadness on the passing of Chief Sylvester Chukwudozie Ezeokenwa, the beloved father of Chief Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa Jr., National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance.
In his condolence remarks, Governor Soludo described Chief Ezeokenwa as an outstanding community leader, a consummate political figure, and a pioneer officer of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra State.
The Governor further stated that the deceased’s legacy of service, leadership, and tenacious commitment to societal progress, which has continued to reflect in his son (Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa Jr.) as the APGA national chairman, will always be remembered and cherished by all APGA members and Ndi Anambra at large.
Soludo condoles with Chief Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa and the entire Ezeokenwa family, praying for the peaceful repose of their patriarch’s soul and comfort for the family at this difficult time.
* Over 50 students have benefitted from a one-day workshop on social impact and personal growth, organized by Fontis Aid Foundation, Anambra, in collaboration with Awka Window on America, UNIZIK.
The workshop, themed “Lift and Rise: Empowering Secondary School Students,” took place on Friday, November 22, 2024, at Awka Window on America Space, UNIZIK. Students from St. John’s Science and Technical College, Alor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University High School, Awka, and Zest International College, Onitsha, participated in the event.
Speaking on social impact and community, the Speaker of the Anambra State Children’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Victory Ekwunife, encouraged students to observe their environments, identify problems, and implement solutions that make lasting impacts.
Ekwunife emphasized the importance of being a problem solver and urged the students to remain consistent in their efforts to bring about social change, even in the face of challenges.
* The First Lady of Anambra State, Mrs Nonye Soludo, has flagged off the second phase of the Healthy Living Organice Garden Programme for communities and secondary schools in the state.
The event which was held in Awka, also saw the inauguration of Healthy Living Ambassadors who would head Healthy Living School Club activities in one hundred selected secondary schools in Anambra State.
The governor’s wife in her address explained that the Healthy Living Garden Programme is targeted at getting the students early in life, to embrace agriculture, imbibe hard work, and love charity, by recognizing the importance of maintaining a garden from where they would get common staple crops needed daily in the family.
Mrs. Soludo also spoke of the Pad Bank initiative launched two years ago in schools by her NGO, regretting that the schools have not maximized the gains of such initiative.
* Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Works and Infrastructure has conducted an inspection of the ongoing dualization of the Nnewi-Ozubulu road, a project aimed at enhancing road infrastructure and easing traffic within the region.
House Committee Chairman on Works and Infrastructure, Hon. Emma Nwafor while speaking during the inspection said the inspection aimed to assess the progress, quality, and challenges associated with the road dualization project, which has been a concern for residents and commuters in the area.
Engr. Nwafor maintained that the road is critical in boosting economic activities and improving connectivity within the industrial city of Nnewi and its neighboring communities.
The Committee Chairman noted that they were at the site to ensure that the work being done meets the quality and expectations of their people and aligns with the vision of the Anambra State Government for robust infrastructure development.
* Police Operatives attached to the Onitsha Head Bridge Divisional Police Headquarters complemented the rescue efforts by good-spirited individuals on the six victims of a gas cylinder explosion at a plumbing market, along Uga Street which regrettably recorded one death.
The welding gas cylinder exploded as the welder was working on a metal due to exposure to excess heat.
According to SP. Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer Anambra State Command, the six rescued victims are currently receiving treatment in the hospital while the deceased has been deposited in a morgue.
The Police Operatives have taken steps to secure the area and prevent criminal-minded persons from taking advantage of the situation to commit crimes.
* Governor Chukwuma Soludo has congratulated an illustrious son of Anambra State and African football legend, Emmanuel Anthony Oguejiofo Okala, on the occasion of his 74th birthday.
In his goodwill message, Governor Soludo recalled that Emmanuel Okala, born in the historic town of Onitsha, rose to national and continental prominence through his brilliant exploits as the towering goalkeeper of the Nigerian national football team between 1972 and 1980.
His dedication, discipline, and excellence between the goalposts earned him the coveted title of Nigerian Footballer of the Year in 1978 and a prominent place in the squad that clinched Nigeria’s first-ever African Cup of Nations title in 1980.
Governor Soludo, while emphasizing that Anambra is a land blessed with heroes and legends, extolled Emmanuel Okala as a towering symbol of Anambra’s sporting pride and Nigeria’s footballing heritage.
