* Governor Chukwuma Soludo has launched the Anambra State Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Unit (ASHEFAMU) and its electronic platform.

Launching the unit in Awka, Governor Soludo represented by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike said that about 80% of Ndi Anambra patronize private health care facilities and that the essence of ASHEFAMU is for the government to have an avenue to know all the health facilities in the state. The governor revealed that the State is second after Lagos state to launch such unit, and noted that ASHEFAMU will bring about efficiency and it will give Ndi Anambra the opportunity to know hospitals that are registered in order to eliminate quackery in the state.

* The First lady of Anambra State Mrs. Nonye Soludo has visited rehabilitation centre, Nteje, and Model Community Children’s Home, Awka. Mrs Soludo visited the facilities with different drugs, sanitary products, beverages, food items, mattresses, and educational materials, among others. The Anambra governor’s wife while speaking noted that she would continue to ensure that the homes are well maintained while every resident is properly taken care of in terms of their health and what they eat. Mrs Soludo who toured all areas of both facilities to ascertain their shapes, commended the managers for taking good care of the people there and for managing the facilities well even with limited resources. 

* The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA), Mr. Ossy Onuko has banned in its entirety, the crossing of Enugu -Onitsha expressway by UNIZIK Temporary site junction Awka through the drainage channels, rather than making use of the pedestrian bridge.

The ban according to Onuko is to prevent accidents that most times result to fatalities as well as ensure discipline in the area. Mr. Onuko while saying that any defaulter will pay N5,000 fine, wondered why people will abandon the pedestrian bridge which has been provided by the State government and be endangering their lives along the express.

* The Chairman Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Anambra State Council, Comrade Chimezie Anaso has applauded the Anambra Beach Soccer Association (ABSA) for hosting the second round edition of the Nation Beach Soccer League. Anaso made the commendation at the end of the second round of the league at the Nnewi High School Beach Soccer Area, Nnewi. Comrade Anaso who described beach soccer as a natural and immensely entertaining brand of football said the association had done well to attract the national competition to Anambra within two years of its formation. The Anambra SWAN Chairman said it was impressive that ABSA did not only raise a state team known as Anambra Beach Soccer Warriors but have been able to midwife to the final four of the last leg of the national league scheduled for Kaduna later in the year.

* A student of the Bishop Crowther Memorial Seminary School, Awka, Anambra State has been burnt to death while several properties including mattresses and other students’ belongings were damaged in a fire outbreak that gut one of the school hostels over the weekend. Though the cause of the fire is yet-to-be ascertained, but it was gathered that the incident occurred on Saturday around 11.30 pm.

The Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Fire Service, Mr. Harrison Nwegwu confirmed this in a statement to newsmen.

* Anambra state government has announced the permanent closure of an unregistered private school in Mgbakwu, Awka North Local Government Area of the state following a teacher’s flog that left an 8-year-pupil in coma. The Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Prof Ngozi Chuma-Udeh disclosing this to journalists in her office, the commissioner said she had invited the 30-year-old teacher, Faith Nwonye, and the proprietor of the school named, Landmark School to explain what led to the brutalization of the primary two pupil.

The Education Commissioner said that the shutting down of the school was not only based on the ugly incident but as a result of its illegality.

* A bill for a law to establish the Anambra State peace building and conflict management agency and for other related  matters has been passed into law on Tuesday May 21 2024 at plenary. After the necessary corrections and interpretations were made at the committee of the whole, Majority Leader Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme moved a motion for the third reading of the bill, he was seconeded by the Minority Leader Hon Johnbosco Akaebobi.

Anambra Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze said the law will commence implementation from June 20th 2024.

* The founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Centre for Herbal Medicine and Centre for Psychic and Healing Administration (CPHA), Awka, Anambra State, Dr Mrs Flora Ifeanyichukwu Nkemakonam Ilonzo has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and governors of 36 States of the federation to invest into herbal tea cultivation and production. Ilonzo gave the charge in her message on May 21st, 2024 world tea day, a day set aside by the United Nations at her December 21, 2019 resolution aimed at creating awareness and fostering collective actions towards sustainable production and consumption of tea with a view to fighting hunger and poverty. She averred that investing into local or herbal tea productions across the country would help the country to diversify her economy, as well as create jobs while improving the health and wellbeing of the populace. 

* The Commissioner of Police Anambra State, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered immediate disciplinary proceedings to commence on the officers seen on a viral video assaulting a citizen.

CP Itam, given the above the command also invites the victim to come forward, to help in facilitating the necessary procedures involved in the process. To this end, the CP reiterated that the command under his watch would not tolerate any form of unprofessional conduct by police personnel and emphasized the need for officers to be courageously calm when dealing with the civil populace especially when being provoked. He also urges citizens to always respect the civil authority and be law-abiding.

* The coalition of Ward Chairmen of the All Progressives Congress across the 326 electoral wards of Anambra state has congratulated Sir Paul Chukwuma on his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the Chairman of the Governing Board of the Federal Polytechnic, Kano. The APC Ward Chairmen conveyed their congratulations to Sir Paul Chukwuma when the former National Auditor of the APC and Pro-Chancellor of Olivia University, Burundi hosted them in an interactive session at his country home in Umueri, Anambra State. They thanked President Tinubu for finding Sir Paul Chukwuma worthy to head the Board of a critical institution of learning.
