* A popular Anambra cleric, Rev. Fr. Anthony Udogu, of the Catholic Diocese of Awka, has passed away.

The priest reportedly slumped and died while playing lawn tennis in Awka, the Anambra State capital.

According to a statement issued by the Diocesan Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Charles Ndubisi, the incident occurred suddenly during the early hours of the day, while the late priest was engaged in a routine tennis session. He said the cleric was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital when he slumped, but all efforts to revive him proved abortive.

The statement described his passing as a painful loss to the entire Catholic Diocese of Awka, and extended condolences to his family, parishioners, and all those affected by his death.

 

* The Federal Road Safety Corps says it has recorded ten percent reduction in the number of road crashes between 2023 and 2024, although the crashes with fatalities increased by seven percent.

Anambra State Sector Commander, Joyce Alexander, who gave the statistics at Amawbia, said the corps recorded thirty-one thousand one hundred and fifty-four road crashes with injuries in 2024 alone, regretting that the statistics are not just numbers, but represent lives lost, families shattered and communities affected, assuring that FRSC shall continue to enforce the urban speed limit for vehicles as recommended by the World Health Organization, WHO.

Alexander, revealed that in a bit to address the challenges, FRSC is actively working with government agencies, communities and partners to advocate for the inclusion of pedestrians bridges, sidewalks, zebra crossings and bicycle lanes in road designs and construction projects, as well as intensify campaigns to promote safe walking and cycling practices; targeting both drivers and vulnerable road users.

* The Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Youth Empowerment Programmes, Dr. Nelson Omenugha has explained why he deemed it fit to have a sober reflective 35th birthday ceremony with orphans and the elderly in Anambra State.

Omenugha who officially turned 35 on 15th May this year, said he personally decided to mark the occasion with vulnerable people in the society inorder to give them sense of belonging and fulfillment because he observed that the said category of people were often neglected, rejected and abandoned in loneliness and depression.

He stressed the dire need for care and affection to be extended to the vulnerable class like the motherless babies, orphans, destitutes, the aged and elderly and others who are incapacitated and unable to fend for themselves.

* A human rights lawyer, Bar. Ifeanyichukwu Ejiofor has condemned in it’s entirety the recent cold-blooded assassination of his colleague, Barrister Rolex Ifeanyi Iloakasia and his client in Anambra state.

Ejiofor insisted that justice must speak on the gruesome murder of the lawyer and the erosion of rule of law in the state.

In a press statement issued at the weekend, Ejiofor declared: “I write with a heavy heart and burning indignation over the cold-blooded assassination of Iloakasia, a respected colleague and President-General of Aguleri community in Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra state and his client – a brutal crime that occurred on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at the Nanka-Agulu boundary in Orumba North Local Government Area of the state”.

* Ahead of the November 8, 2025, governorship election in Anambra State, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), The All Rights Foundation Africa, otherwise known as TAF Africa, has commenced sensitisation campaign for the inclusion of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) and other vulnerable persons in the electoral process.

The group said the inclusion of the PWDs in all the electoral processes for the election remained critical to the success of the exercise.

The group announced it commencement at a one-day sensitisation programme tagged: “ABLE2VOTE-Voter Education Campaign to Reduce Voter Apathy and Promote the Mainstreaming of PWDs in the electoral process.

* The Ministry of Health Anambra State in collaboration with the Anambra State Aids Control Agency (ANSACA) has held a three-Day Stakeholders’ Sensitization Meeting for the development of Anambra State HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan 2025 to 2027.

The meeting created avenue for the concerned parties to plan for all the activities that would address all the HIV thematic areas in terms of treatment, prevention, care, support and equally to address gender and human right issues in the state so as to ensure that Anambra State achieved its HIV epidemic control schedule which is aimed at ending the scourge by the year 2030.

Addressing the meeting, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike said that for the expected result in the control of HIV/AIDS to be well achieved, the stakeholders as well as health workers so concerned need to be trained and retrained on the concept of the disease especially in the handling of the affected persons vis-à-vis the administration of the ailment.

* Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Works and Infrastructure on Wednesday conducted an inspection of the ongoing Okija-Ihiala road.

House Committee Chairman on Works and Infrastructure, Hon. Emma Nwafor while speaking during their over sight function at the 4.1 km road, said the inspection aimed to assess the progress, quality, and challenges associated with the project.

The member representing Ihiala two Constituency, Hon. Golden Iloh said his people has been clamoring for this project because its a major road connecting Ihiala town and Okija.

Speaking on behalf of Rojal company, the site engineer, Mr. Mark Agu said the maintenance and corrections pointed out by the lawmakers have been observed and noted. He promised the Committee members that more efforts will be made to meet up to the deadline.

The Youth Leader of the community, Mr. Victor Obi expressed happiness over the progress on the road, and caller for the addition of bumbs so as to checkmate speed limits of road users. He promised that they will continue to support Soludo’s administration through ensuring that the Governor returned for second term.

* The All Progressives Congress (APC) in a move to strengthen the party’s structure and operations, have held a strategic post-primary meeting in Dunukofia Local Government Area, Anambra State.

In his opening remark, the Chairman, Comrade Dandove Nwankwo outlined several strategic initiatives aimed at consolidating the party’s position in Dunukofia.

The chairman announced plans for an upcoming ward tour which will focus on verification of local government executives, ward officials and party members. The tour will be complemented by a new membership recruitment drive targeting all 14 wards in Dunukofia.

* Anambra State Government has commemorated 2025 World Hypertension Day, with assurance that checking of blood pressure will henceforth be free of cost in all the Primary Health Care centres and government owned secondary facilities across the State.

Addressing the press, the State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Afam Obidike said that two years ago, they did what it called solution know your number which helps people to live longer and happily, measure blood pressure accurately and monthly.

Dr. Obidike urged people who have blood pressure to maintain their drugs so that it cannot trigger stroke, saying that the day is of critical importance as it presents another opportunity to raise awareness about hypertension, one of the most prevalent, yet often overlooked, non-communicable diseases

According to Dr. Obidike, hypertension is the leading risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases and is responsible for a significant proportion of premature deaths and that It is estimated that over one billion people are currently living with hypertension, yet only a fraction are aware of their conditions or have it effectively controlled.

Dr. Obidike noted that n Anambra, hypertension remains a major public health concern, prompting the government to implement several aggressive campaigns and programmes aimed at reducing its burden, saying that Out of 2,362 individuals screened, 651 were diagnosed with hypertension.
