* Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has stormed the streets of Awka, the capital city of the State in search of beggars. The search for and the apprehension of the beggars, which started recently is being carried out by the State Ministry of Women Affairs, in collaboration with the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA Brigade).
* Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka recently unveiled its newly constructed International Centre for Trade and Research, expected to enhance trade and research activities within and outside the university. ANN gathered that the state-of-the-art centre is designed to facilitate groundbreaking research and capacity building that would drive Nigeria’s progress in regional integration and trade.
* Anambra State Police Command on Saturday 26th May 2023, collaborated with the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) Anambra Chapter to visit the Police Children School, Awka and distributed gift items like exercise books and bags. ANN reports that the Command through the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, In celebration of 2023 children’s day, during interaction with the pupil noted that children are the future and part of the conscience of our community and should be monitored, not neglected.
* Anambra State government has commenced the apprehension and taking off the streets of underage hawkers operating and selling sachet water, drinks and other goods along the various streets and markets around the Awka metropolis. ANN recalls that the state government had earlier banned underage hawking, street trading, street begging and other such activities capable of denigrating the State and exposing the people to different kinds of danger and risks.The enforcement team, led by Commissioner Ify Obinabo, visited Aroma Junction, Unizik Junction, Amawbia Flyover, Eke Awka Markets; Zik’s Avenue; Arthur Eze Avenue, among other places, where they arrested no fewer than thirty (30) beggars and underage hawkers.
* Chief Barr. Ifeatu Obi-Okoye, the newly elected Anambra State Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, has predicted that APGA will win the governorship election in 2025. Obi-Okoye who was Special Adviser on Political Matters to the Anambra State Government when ex-governor Willie Obiano won all the 21 local government areas in the 2018 governorship polls; was equally very instrumental in Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo’s electoral conquest in 2021; a time when some members of APGA in Anambra became dissidents and sabotaged Soludo’s gubernatorial aspiration over alleged pecuniary interest in the opposition camp.
* The Anambra State Government has declared that henceforth traditional rulers, presidents-general and other community leaders involved in revenue diversions would be arrested and the full weight of the law brought upon them as the state revenue courts begin operation.
Government frowned at a situation where touts and other revenue scavengers would be arrested and kept in custody and traditional rulers, presidents-general and other stakeholders in the communities would be making phone calls and demanding their immediate release because the criminals are their boys.
* Chairman of Anambra State Internal Revenue Service (AIRS) Mr Richard Madiebo has disclosed that the state government generate monthly revenue of N100 millions from tricycle operators alone. Madiebo made the disclosure recently while briefing journalists on the success they have made through the digitalisation of revenue collection in the state.
* Ndi Achalla, a community in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra state have handed over the placards and letters they wrote against peace committee handling the Achalla and Urum land dispute, to the appropriate authorities. ANN reports that the people of Achalla recently staged a peaceful protest at Government House Awka to register their grievances.
* Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo CFR, on behalf of Anambra State Government has signed a five-year agreement with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which was signed at the Government House, Awka, can be extended for another five years on expiration.
Shortly after the signing ceremony, the Governor also opened a temporary UNDP office for use in Awka.
* Anambra State government has canceled the monthly sanitation for the month of May 2023. A press release signed by Mr Mike Ozoemena, MD/CEO, Anambra State Waste Management
Authority (ASWAMA) read thus,”This is to inform residents of Anambra State that the usual last Saturday environmental sanitation exercise for the month of May 2023 scheduled for this Saturday will not hold in Anambra State. This is to enable the children of Anambra State join their counterparts across the nation in marking the annual Children’s day celebration holding same day.
