# Students of Federal Polytechnic, Oko have passed a vote of confidence on their Rector, Dr. Irene Awuzie and the governing board of the school for the speedy development and revitalization of the institution within short period.

The students passed the vote of confidence as a reaction to what they described as “uninformed criticism” coming from some stakeholders following the appointment of the rector and other heads of tertiary institutions in Anambra State.

The students who passed the vote of confidence during solidarity work in the school premises, appreciated the rector and governing board for the laudable programmes and policies being implemented in the school.

Speaking on behalf of the students, the President of Students Union Government of the school, Comrade Chinaecherem Odumegwu said Dr Awuzie merits her appointment as Rector and in the short time she has piloted the affairs of the school has shown her capacity in uplifting the academic and infrastructural fortunes of the school.

# The Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs Ify Obinabo has urged parents, educators, community leaders and all stakeholders to join hands in supporting anti-bullying initiatives.

Obinabo said this at the 2025 children’s day celebration, held at Solution Fun city Awka, Anambra State.

The Commissioner made the call in line with this years theme “Stand up, Speak up: Building a bullying free generation.”

Mrs Obinabo explained that bullying is a serious issue that can have long term consequences on the Child’s mental and emotional well-being.

# Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad Nnewi Sector, acting on credible information on how the proscribed Movement for Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has set out plans to enforce Sit-At-Home on the 30th of May 2025 arrested one Friday Obeta aged 37 years and recovered one motorcycle, a branded t-shirt and an operational Identification card of the proscribed organization.

The suspect confessed to being a member and an informant to the proscribed group and has made useful information that is aiding the investigation for the possible arrest of other gang members.

To this end, Anambra Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu charged the Operatives to intensify their onslaught operations, given the suspect’s confessions.

Orutugu further urged them to step up surveillance operations to thwart any unlawful gathering in the State.

# Anambra Governor’s wife, Dr. Nonye Soludo has called for intensified campaign to reach out to more women and girls who are currently facing menstrual hygiene challenges.

The governor’s wife who disclosed this in her message to mark this year’s World Menstrual Hygiene Day, noted that with the increasing number of women, particularly girls who need urgent solutions to menstrual needs, it has become imperative for stakeholders to re-strategize their approach to the campaign.

Official data say that an estimated 37 million women and girls in Nigeria are unable to afford sanitary pads and only rely on unhygienic alternatives.

The data amplify an official finding from the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) which reveal that major gaps in water, sanitation and hygiene infrastructure create barriers for women and girls to manage menstruation safely and with dignity.

Nzekwesi described it as false, mere cheap propaganda meant to attract sympathy to a notorious family which is the architect of their own troubles.

* Anambra State Government has taken delivery of five hundred pieces of life jackets donated to the State by the Federal Government through the federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy for Inland Water Transport in the State.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Commissioner for Transport, Mrs Patricia Igwebuike, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, represented by the Director of Maritime Abiotic Resources of the ministry, Dr Uzoamaka Okereke said that Anambra is among the states mapped out for the presentation of the life jackets to boost safety on river transportation in the states and reduce boat mishaps.

Okereke maintained that the move is part of the ongoing renewed hope of President Bola Tinubu to ensure better life for Nigerians.

Receiving the life jackets, the Commissioner Igwebuike said the gesture is historic as it exemplified the greater synergy and collaboration between the national, sub national governments championed by the President Bola Tinubu administration, adding that Anambra State Government has continued to take measures aimed at modernizing and improving the safety of lives and properties on the waterways.

* The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has ordered the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to refund the sum of N475,000 to an 80-year-old retired civil servant and widow Mrs Ngozika Okolie in Anambra State.

The refund relates to years of illegal and arbitrary billing, which the commission deemed unjustifiable.

According to NERC, prior to the takeover of electricity distribution by EEDC from the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), the woman had an outstanding balance of N72,000.

The regulatory body directed EEDC to deduct this amount from the total accumulated debt of N547,000 and refund the balance to the affected consumer.

* Stakeholders, teachers and students have commended the government of Anambra State for it’s deliberate effort at improving the standard of education in the state with various policies, while also ensuring the welfare of children in the state.

They shared their view during the Children’s Day celebration held at the Solution Fun City in Awka.

According to the Managing Director of Awka Capital Development Authority, ACTDA, Dr. Ossy Onuko, holding the celebration at the Solution Fun City has given the children of Anambra a sense of belonging, given that such world class facilities never existed in the state since its creation, emphasizing that its impact is innumerable.

A stakeholder, Barrister Titus Akpudo, appreciated the state government for its deliberate approach as it concerns education and building infrastructure, such as the construction of Solution Fun-city, which would redefine relaxation in the state and also pointed out, that the free education, free antenatal and free delivery services in the state are all geared towards uplifting the Anambra child for a better tomorrow and future.
