* Wife of the Governor of Anambra State, Mrs. Nonye Soludo has called for review of the National Gender Policy and supporting bills, to further encourage involvement of women in politics. Mrs. Soludo made the statement in Awka while assessing the performance of female candidates that vied for different representative positions in the just concluded elections. The governor’s wife’s remarks were coming after a recent review which revealed that ninety-six per cent of women who contested in the 2023 general election lost to their male counterparts.
* Market leaders across Anambra North Senatorial Zone are currently living in fear following the determination of the Executive Director, Anambra North Internal Revenue Service Dr. Christian Madubuko to rid markets in the area of revenue fraud. Dr. Madubuko has been visiting markets under Anambra North to sensitise the leaders on the need to shut all revenue leakages in their various markets. Madubuko had earlier paid an unscheduled visit to Onitsha Textile Market popularly known as “Ogbo abada” and Ogbaru Main Market.
* The Anambra State Health Insurance Agency, ASHIA, has taken free health insurance registration to motor parks to register commercial vehicle drivers who had paid their mandatory monthly taxes and levies to the Anambra state government. Speaking during the registration exercise, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of (ASHIA), Dr. Simeon Onyemaechi who said that the payment of the taxes and levies make them eligible to benefit from the free premium given to them by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, appealed to commercial motorcycle and bus drivers, tricycle riders and others to come and register to benefit from all the packages offered by the Agency, as the Soludo administration in his magnanimity offered the drivers free health insurance so far the person had paid the statutory monthly driving permit in the state.
* The Chairman, Orumba South Local Government Area, Anambra State, Prince Nevile Uchendu, has issued certificate of return to the newly elected president of Nawfija Youth Association, Comrade Emmanuel Okereke and the newly elected Youth President of Ezira, both in Orumba South LGA, to legalize their new positions.
The occasion which took place at Orumba South Secretariat, was graced by the leaders of Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASATU Youths) Orumba South, headed by Okwadike, Mayor Orumba South.
* Traders at Ogbaru Main Market near Ontisha may drown inside Sakamori following the collapse of a portion of the Sakamori bridge in the area. The President-General of the market, Mr. Ndubuisi Ochiogu who spoke on behalf of the traders in the market appealed to the Federal Government as well as the Anambra State Government to assist the traders to fix the failed portion of the abandoned Sakamori bridge, pointing out that it would amount to a catastrophic situation should the dilapidation escalate.
* There was confusion in Amansea town of Awka North LGA over the disappearance of the corpse of the oldest man in the community, Pa Micheal Nwanwuba Onyekwelu, from a mortuary. Late Onyekwelu, aged 115 years, died and his corpse was deposited at one Regina Hospital to pave the way for burial ceremonies at the deceased’s family house in Orebe community. Another family from a yet-to-be-identified community in Nsukka, Enugu State that deposited the dead body of their father mistakingly took away the remains of late Onyekwelu and had since buried him two weeks ago before the actual bereaved family came for the corpse. Further findings showed that the body of Pa Onyekwelu was finally exhumed and taken back to Orebe community for burial.
* Anambra state government has permanently sealed off Saint Norbert Hospital, Amansea, in Awka North Local Government Area, over quackery and illegal medical services to people in the area.
ANN reports that a team from the state Ministry of Health led by the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike permanently sealed off the said hospital after some background investigations on the illegal activities in the facility by one Dr Kingsley.
* The Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, His Lordship, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, has urged the faithful to walk with Christ at all times. The Prelate gave the advice during his homily while on a pastoral visit to St Peter’s Catholic Church, Ugbene in Awka North LGA, Anambra State. Bishop Ezeokafor said that walking with Christ was an act of recognizing Christ in faith which, he said, enabled the faithful to always live a good Christian life and being committed to missionary work.
* Young business tycoon and chairman of ABU Mmaduaburochukwu Group of Companies, Chief Mmaduaburochukwu Christopher Attah, was recognised by All Star Football Club, Awka, for his immeasurable contribution to the development of sports in the capital city and beyond. Chairman of the Club, Hon. Ikechukwu Nweke, while presenting a customised jersey to Chief Attah, who is also the founder of ABU Mmaduaburochukwu Foundation, stated that the visionary and people-oriented Mmaduaburochukwu, had done wonderfully well, in his individual capacity, to improve young footballing talents in Awka, amongst other engagements.
* Governor Chukwuma Soludo has paid an official visit to the operational Headquarters of Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) Brigade in Awka, to inspect the guard and have an interactive session with the officials of the agency. Commending the officials for their professionalism and work ethics in restoring sanity in Anambra’s public spaces and enforcing good public conduct where and when necessary, Governor Soludo announced an improved 10% increase in salary across all levels of the staff of the agency to help improve their performance and equip them against corrupt practices while dealing with offenders.
