* Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to direct the Commissioner for Education to engage public, private, and mission schools in
addressing the exorbitant costs of textbooks, school uniforms purchase from exclusively designated vendors and mandatory extramural classes.

The resolution was made following a motion moved by the Majority Leader and member representing Ekwusigo Constituency, Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme during the plenary session on Tuesday.

The majority Leader in his submissions stated that the current practices in Anambra State primary and secondary schools of using textbooks as workbooks, uniform purchase from exclusively designated vendor and mandatory extramural classes place undue financial burdens on parents and guardians, particularly for families with multiple children in the same school or classes.

The Speaker, Rt Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, who presided the sitting, commended the Majority Leader for sponsoring the motion. Udeze suggested that the motion is good enough to be a law. He asked the committee on education and that of judiciary to look at the law establishing schools so as to do an amendment or a bill to regulate school practices.

* A member of representing Awka North and South Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Prof Lilian Orogbu has expressed worry over rising security challenges in Anambra State, even though, in her assessment, the State Governor, Professor Charles Soludo has been doing well in road constructions in Anambra.

Orogbu noted that Anambra residents would only be alive to use the roads due to escalation of insecurity in the state.

The lawmaker said that apart from road constructions, that the goings-on in Anambra State fell short of her expectations under Governor Soludo’s watch especially in the area of security.

* The Pro-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Amb Greg Mbadiwe has has directed academic Staff Union of universities ASUU of the insitution and those that dragged the university to Court to withdraw cases or face disciplinary actions.

Amb Greg Mbadiwe issued the directive, on behalf of the Governing Council.

This directive, contained in an internal memo dated November 11, 2024, and referenced NAU/REG/958/Vol.VII/44, demands that staff members withdraw such lawsuits within seven days.

* The Anambra State Ministry of Environment has issued a stern warning to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to cease its indiscriminate cutting of trees along the Enugu-Onitsha Highway.

This action is in line with the Anambra State Environmental Management Protection and Administration Law 2024, which prohibits illegal tree cutting.

According to the Ministry, the trees were intentionally planted to beautify the environment, serve as carbon sinks, provide shade, and reduce air pollution.

 

* Chairman, Gamechanger Academy Football Club, Surveyor Obi Emeka Chukwudi has described Anambra’s appearance at the Nigeria National League after over two decades, as a major achievement for youth and sports development in the state.

Obi, a grassroots sports investor in Anambra State made the remarks when he paid a visit to the Chairman of the Anambra State Sports Commission, Patrick Estate Onyedum in his office in Awka.

Obi, who is the State Chairman of National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for providing the political milieu that ensured the realization of the feat, saying the qualification will provide the opportunity for budding football talents in the state to develop themselves.

 

* The Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to direct the Commissioner for Health to commence the regulation of all manner of food and allied food products and drugs sold and consumed in Anambra State in line with the provisions of the national policy on food safety as well as the National Drug Control Masterplan (NDCMP) 2021 – 2025 in order to checkmate unwholesome food.

and drug practices and ensure, protect and preserve the health and safety of Anambarians.

The resolution was made following a motion sponsored by the member representing Aguata two constituency Hon Tony Muobike at plenary on Tuesday.

Hon. Muobike who is the House Committee Chairman on Health in his submissions stated that the National policy on food safety mandates the States’ Ministry of Health with the role of transforming food hygiene and safety policies into programs of activities for implementation in the states.

 

* The lawmaker representing Ogbaru one constituency Hon. Noble Chukwunonso Igwe have described the appointment of Prince Ken Emeakayi as Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security as a welcome development.

Hon. Igwe who is the Chairman House of Assembly Committee on Public Accounts, Deputy Chairman Committee on Media and Publicity in an interview said Okija the country home of Prince Ken Emeakayi has watertight security coupled with solar-powered cameras in all the nooks and crannies of the community to track and trail illegal movements.

The lawmaker said that Governor Soludo was not sleeping over security issues in the state as he is working assiduously to ensure that the state is safe and secured even as he disclosed too that the governor has instructed all the newly minted Mayors of the 21 Local Government Areas to make sure that they have very functional security teams in their respective council areas.

 

* The Rotary and Rotaract Clubs in Awka Axis under Anambra Zone of Rotary International District 9142, has offered free medical services to residents of the metropoli. The exercise took place at Umuogbunu village town hall Awka on Saturday.

Speaking to Journalists on behalf of the Irresistible Rotary Presidents shortly after the exercise, the President, Rotary Club of Awka Central, Rotarian Agubata Ekene, said the outreach was organised by Rotary International District 9124 but in collaboration with clubs in Anambra Zone where 3 sites; Nnewi, Onitsha and Awka are currently executing same exercise.

Ekene said that the outreach was in response to one area of focuses of Rotary International, which focused on providing high-quality health care to vulnerable people in the society, particularly, women and children.

 

* A leader from Akpu community in Orumba South LGA of Anambra State, Chief Innocent Ike-Ibe, has urged the Federal Government of Nigeria to immortalize the late former Chairman of the National Election Commission (now the Independent National Electoral Commission), Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, as a result of his contributions to the electoral development of the country.

Chief Ike-Ibe made the called in an interview with Journalists in Awka recently.

Nwosu, who conducted the June 12, 1993 election annulled by former President Ibrahim Babangida, served as Chairman of NEC from 1989 to 1993, died at the age of 83 in Virginia, USA, after a brief illness.

 

* The State Commandant of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Anambra State Command, Maku Olatunde in company of other service commanders on Wednesday paid a condolence visit to Col. Adamu Kabir Muhammad, the Commander, 302 Artillery Regiment, Nigerian Army Onitsha over the passing of Lieutenant-General Taoreed Lagbaja, who up until his demise the Chief of Army staff (COAS).

Comdt. Maku in an emotion laden speech condoled with the Armed Forces of Nigeria, family and friends of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Lagbaja, describing him, as one who dedicated his life and wealth of experience to the defense of the nation’s sovereignty.

Speaking further, Comdt. Maku stated that the late COAS would be greatly missed for his accomplishments and remarkable service to the fight against insurgency and terrorism in the country.

Responding, Col. Muhammad, Commander 302 (AR) Nigeria Army, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the State Commandant and fellow service Commanders for taking the time to share in their sorrow.
