* The Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo has received the “Chinua Achebe Award of Excellence” from the Society of Young Nigerian Writers, Anambra State Chapter in recognition of his immortalization of the father of Africa Literature, Professor Chinua Achebe.
Governor Soludo received the award at the 2024 Chinua Achebe Literary Festival and Memorial Lecture organized by the society held at the Professor Kenneth Dike Central E-Library, Awka.
Receiving the award at the event with the theme, “Remembering Achebe in a time like this”, Governor Soludo represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Ernest Ezeajughi acknowledged the contributions made by the African literary icon to the state which he said was why he immortalized him and asked the students to aim to follow the footsteps of Professor Achebe as a role model, underscoring that they now have better opportunities to excel more than Achebe.
* In a significant step towards transforming Nnewi’s infrastructure, the demolition of marked structures commenced has commenced to pave way for the dual road reconstruction project.
The project aimed at enhancing connectivity and boost economic growth in the region.
President Nzuko-Ora Nnewi, Dr. Maduka Atuenyi, expressed support for the project, praising Governor Soludo for initiating the work. He ensured a smooth demolition process with security personnel.
Earlier while presenting the award to Governor Soludo, the State Coordinator of the society and convener of the event, comrade Izunna Okafor, thanked the Governor for listening to their cries by immortalizing Professor Achebe after over seven years of his demise.
* The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN,) has called on the Nigerian Police to investigate the alleged invasion of Maureen Madu Kiddies Football Academy, Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area on Oct. 9.
Madu, one of the most decorated Super Falcons Stars, had alleged that personnel suspected to be operatives of Anti Cult Unit Ukpo invaded her academy, beat up players, smashed and seized their phones before taking her away in handcuffs.
The two-time Olympian said it was a case of a parent who handed over his daughter to her for summer coaching and later leveled allegations of Armed Gangsterism, Attempted, Child Trafficking and Threat to Life against her.
SWAN, Anambra State Chapter in the Statement signed by Chimezie Anaso and Uche Ndeke, Chairman and Secretary respectively on Monday called on the Police hierarchy in Anambra to investigate the matter and ensure justice was done to all parties.
* In a show of solidarity and cooperation, information officers from the Ministry of Information, Awka posted to Nnewi North LGA have paid a visit to the Chairman of the LGA, Mr Echezona Anazodo to familiarize themselves with him and also congratulate him on his emergence as the newly elected chairman.
Mr Anazodo who warmly welcomed the officers, promised to collaborate with them and expressed his joy at having them on board.
He emphasized his commitment to working closely with Governor Charles Soludo to transform Nnewi into a great city.
As the newly elected chairman, Anazodo has already begun making strides in Nnewi North. He has inspected damaged roads, reaffirming his commitment to partnering with the community for development. With his focus on security, infrastructure, and youth empowerment, Anazodo aims to make Nnewi North a prosperous homeland for all.
* Gunmen has launched simultaneous attacks on two communities in Anambra State, leaving a trail of death and destruction.
The gunmen stormed Abatete town, targeting security personnel attached to the town’s President-General (PG).
Three security men were shot and killed in the hail of bullets.
In a separate incident, gunmen attacked Ukpo Community at the Ukpo roundabout, in Dunukofia Local Government Area of the state killing one Vigilante Group member and a motorcycle rider.
* The Joint Transporters Forum, JTF, Anambra State Chapter, has expressed satisfaction over the ongoing projects by the Charles Soludo government.
The President of the forum, Comrade Elvis Okolie, who made this known when he led high ranking members of the forum on a tour to Soludo’s projects sites across the state, on Tuesday, said, the projects would outlive both the immediate and the future generations.
Okolie, who is also, a member of Soludo Ambassadors, expressed belief that when completed, the Ekwulobia Flyover would totally eliminate the terrible traffic jam, people used to experience in the area.
* Labour Party (LP) Frontline governorship aspirant in the Anambra State 2025 Governorship Election, Mr John Nwosu, has extolled a former governor of the state, Peter Obi, for his philanthropy in Education.
Nwosu in a statement said, “It is most gratifying how our National Leader Peter Obi leads by example and by laying emphasis on qualitative education in Anambra State, even long after leaving office as the State Governor in 2014.
Stating that if elected the governor of the state in 2025 he would emulate Obi’s leadership template, Nwosu said, “As a disciple of Peter Obi’s Model of Education and his transformative governance style, I have made a personal commitment to underpin the educational achievements made so far in Anambra, with a robust and overarching STEM curriculum for Anambra State.”
* The Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, has carried out unscheduled visits to Awkuzu and Enugwu-Ukwu General Hospitals aimed at assessing the state of healthcare, service delivery and ensuring that hospitals in the state maintain high standards of service, cleanliness, and patient care.
Obidike toured various departments within both hospitals, including the outpatient and emergency units, as well as the wards.
During the visits, the Commissioner observed the condition of hospital facilities, the availability of medical supplies, and the overall welfare of patients and staff.
Dr. Obidike emphasized the importance of maintaining operational excellence in all public health facilities across the state.
* One Mr. Tochukwu Obumneme from Obosi in Idemili South Local Government Area has allegedly attempted to cripple his wife Chizoba with a pestle over a minor misunderstanding.
The incident that took place in their house in Asaba, Delta State was said to have escalated after he left the wife at her parent’s house in Onitsha for delaying him without remorse.
The complainant, Mrs Chizoba Obumneme, noted that it first started as a threat till he went to the kitchen, brought the pestle, and hit her leg, stating that this is not the first time he has raised his hands on her.
After she lodged her complaint, the husband was invited for a peaceful meditation at the office of Anambra Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare which he didn’t honor but rather threatened his wife and the social welfare officer for inviting him.
The Women Affairs Commissioner, Mrs Ify Obinabo, after listening to the complaint, promised to get justice for the survivor.
* In an effort to encourage education among younger ones, JDM Global Foundation Incorporated has given scholarship to pupils, donated Instructional materials to some primary schools in Aguata and Nnewi South local council areas
In her remark during the event, the Head of the Foundation, Mrs. Jennifer Madubuko, represented by the organization Secretary, Venerable Okechukwu Ifionu believed that every child should have access to quality education not minding their background, as according to her, education is a bedrock for growth and development.
The traditional ruler of Utuh Community, Igwe Peter Illomuanya represented by the Palace Secretary, Prince Okonna Mbanefo, appreciated the kind gesture of the benefactor in giving back to her community and society, noting that youths determine the future of the society.
