* Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, has expressed readiness to look into the possibility of creating more departments in the Anambra State Ministry of Information for optimal performance.

Speaking when he received the executive members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ministry of Information Chapel, who paid him a courtesy visit at his office in Awka, Dr. Mefor noted that adding one or two departments, training staff, equipping the Situation Room, and provision of a bus or two, among others, will help to further promote the good works of the government.

The Commissioner further thanked the union leaders for accepting him as their member and urged the workers to add ginger to what they do, while assuring that he would try to mobilise and motivate them as much as possible and provide the needed leadership.

* The physically-challenged employees of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, under the aegis of ‘Association of UNIZIK Staff With Disabilities’, have lamented over their unpaid salaries since 2020 that they were engaged as employees by the institution.

They said their inability to be captured into the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System since 2020, is the cause of their predicament and the reason they have not been receiving their salaries since 2020.

The group, therefore urged President Bola Tinubu and other relevant agencies to intervene into their plights and help them remove the bureaucratic bottlenecks, saying that life has become unbearably difficult as a result.

In an open letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu and made available to our correspondent in Awka, on Monday, the group urged the President to use his good offices to compel IPPIS to capture them into the payment platform.

* The senator representing Anambra Central, Senator Dr. Victor Umeh has again flagged off the construction of a block of six classrooms at Udoka Primary School Eziowelle in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

According to Senator Umeh, education is the bedrock of any development. The school projects across various communities is a demonstration of his commitment to the development of education in Anambra Central Senatorial District

A community Chieftain of Eziowelle, High Chief Paul Okose, while speaking on the development described the flag-off as historic, he commended the lawmaker for being a promise-keeper, he noted that the community would forever be grateful for the project.

* The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra has urged road users to take responsibility for their safety to avoid road accident and stay alive.

The Sector Commander of the corps, Mrs Joyce Alexander made the call at the 37th Customers Service Week celebration with the theme ‘Above and Beyond’, on Wednesday in Awka.

The Customer service week marked from October 7th to October 11th, is an international celebration that calls attention to the importance of customer service and the people who provide the service.

Alexander said: “Every motorist is an adult who knows what is right or wrong and does not need the enforcement from FRSC officials to do what is right to make our roads safe and accident free.

* The Senator Representing Anambra North Senatorial District has moved a motion on the urgent need to prevent and stop state Governors from using State House of Assembly Members to enact laws that will breach constitutional provisions and Supreme Court judgement that granted financial autonomy to Local Government in line with the constitution of the Federal republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended.

Dr. Nwoye in his submission asserted that Senate is aware that Section 7 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), guarantees the system of democratically elected local government councils and explicitly provides for their autonomy, including financial and administrative independence;

Further aware that the Supreme Court of Nigeria on Thursday, July 11, 2024, in Sc/343/2024 delivered a landmark judgment wherein they ruled that all funds due to the 774 local Government Areas (LGAs) in Nigeria from the Federation account must be paid directly into the accounts of Local Governments and no longer through State and Local Government Joint Account thereby affirming the constitutional provision granting financial autonomy to local governments, thus ensuring that local government councils operate without undue interference or control from state governments.

* The Nigerian Institute of Architects, Anambra State Chapter (NIAASC), has praised the leadership of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) for its ongoing efforts in transforming the Awka Capital Territory.

This commendation was made during a courtesy visit to the ACTDA office in Awka.

During the visit, NIAASC Chairman, Dr. Ikenna Onorah, highlighted the importance of fostering closer synergy with ACTDA, pointing to various developmental projects that could thrive through such collaboration.

Responding to the recognition, Mr. Onuko expressed his gratitude and emphasized the indispensable role that architects play in urban development, acknowledging the Institute’s contributions to ACTDA’s success. He further reiterated his commitment to forging partnerships that align with the state’s broader goal of creating a liveable and prosperous homeland as envisioned by Governor Soludo.

* New chairman, Comrade Nworah Nnaemeka has end sixteen years of neglect by commissioning a water project
at Odera Market in Awka South Local Government Area, Anambra State.

Chairman of Ezinanor community and leader of Ezi Awka, Chief Tochukwu Nwokoye, during an inspection of the project, expressed satisfaction with the rapid progress.

Addressing Journalists, the Chairman of Odera Market Comrade Nworah Nnaemeka, who has been in office for just over two months, shared his vision for the market’s continued development.

* The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), in conjunction with Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), has held the HRM Obi Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe Lecture Series.

The lecture, ‘Achieving Peace and Reconciliation in Nigeria: The Public Relations Approach,’ held at the ETF Auditorium, COOU, Igbariam, attracted dignitaries from within and outside the state.

Speaking at the occasion, Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor while reacting to the keynote lecture delivered by Prof. Pat Utomi said that Soludo was intentionally creating employers of labour through the One Youth, Two Skills Programme and free education up to senior secondary.

Dr. Mefor also told the audience that “Soludo’s government believes that the future of Anambra will be anchored in innovation and tech, and the digital community to drive this future is also being produced through digital infrastructure and the training of thousands of ICT professionals, thus creating a digital ecosystem for Anambra State. Yes, indeed, the solution is here.,” Mefor declared.

* The Anambra State Police Command has announced the rescue of journalists kidnapped in the state.

In a statement by its spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, on Thursday, the command reported that joint security forces successfully rescued six members of a media crew who were abducted while traveling from Lagos to Uyo along the Isseke-Orlu Road in Ihiala.

Ikenga also stated that operations are ongoing for the possible rescue of a seventh crew member.

Youth leader, Onyedika Eweh in a statement said contrary to the motion moved by Member representing Aguata Federal Constituency, Hon.

Dominic Okafor; calling for probe of the Project, the Contractor and the purpose of the alleged abandonment, most of the equipment for the project is already on site, including the transformers.

He added that every required earth moving work for the landscaping and other necessary preparations were done and completed since late 2023, and work was in progress until the site was attacked by gunmen who killed two staff of the Cartlark International Limited at Ibughubu Umuchu.
