# The International Non-Governmental Organisation for Safe Abortion and Contraception, IPAS, has unveiled a new six- to seven-year programme aimed at reducing unsafe abortion and improving access to reproductive health services in Anambra State.

The Co-Director of IPAS, Mr. Samsu Gombwer, disclosed this during a visit to the Anambra State Ministry of Health in Awka, where he briefed the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, on the programme.

Gombwer said the programme was designed to strengthen existing efforts by the state government and improve access to appropriate reproductive health services.

He noted that the long-term nature of the programme placed a major responsibility on the state and its partners to ensure that its objectives were achieved, stressing the need for effective collaboration among government officials, relevant agencies and other stakeholders.

According to him, the programme’s focus on improving access to contraceptive services was particularly important, as increased access to family planning and related services could contribute to reducing maternal deaths.

#  The commitment, understanding and leadership of Heads of Departments, Heads of Units, Area Commanders, Divisional Officers, Composite Commanders and Tactical Heads have been described as essential ingredients for effective protection of Critical National, State and Local Government Assets and Infrastructure and the overall success of the Corps’ mandate.

Commandant Maku Olatunde, the NSCDC Anambra State Commandant, made this known during a tactical digest organized for Heads of Departments and Units, Area Commanders, Divisional Officers, Composite Commanders and Tactical Heads at the State Command Headquarters, Awka.

The State Commandant further disclosed that the Corps’ mandate of safeguarding critical assets and infrastructure can only be achieved if all Departments, Units, Area Commands, Divisions and Tactical formations take full responsibility for translating the Command’s operational objectives into concrete actions within their respective Areas of Responsibility.

He cautioned against dereliction of duty, lack of supervision and acts capable of tarnishing the image of the Corps, warning that defaulters would face sanctions.

# The 2027 People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Senatorial Candidate for Anambra South Senatorial District, Prince Samben Nwosu has pledged his undiluted dedication to give the good people of Anambra South a better representation. 

Samben Nwosu made this known during an interaction with the students, who came out en masse to hear  his antecedents.

He promised to create enabling laws for all his constituents and leave a legacy they will live to remember.

As a Certified Business Developer, who has helped so many traders to get grants and loans from Federal Government through Bank of Industry, he further pledged to create enormous opportunities for students, traders, youths and destitutes.

# Members of the newly constituted House Committee on ICT, Innovation and Signage of the Anambra State House of Assembly have paid a familiarisation visit to the Anambra State ICT Agency.

The delegation was led by the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Patrick Udoba, and included Hon. Noble Igwe and Hon. Emmanuel Nwafor.

The lawmakers were received by the Managing Director/CEO of the Agency, Mr Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata.

The visit provided an opportunity for members of the newly constituted Committee to familiarize themselves with the Agency, its mandate and its role in the state’s technology ecosystem.

The Anambra State ICT Agency is responsible for coordinating, regulating and enhancing ICT development across the state, in line with the state’s digital transformation objectives.

The visit comes as technology and innovation continue to play an important role in government operations and public service delivery across the state.

# Idemili South Mayor, Hon. Oluchukwu Ilogbenu, has assumed duty with the declaration of environmental cleanliness as his top priority.

Ilogbenu, who reaffirmed his commitment to tackling environmental degradation and promoting cleanliness to achieve healthy living, was sworn-in alongside other new mayors in the state by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

He charged the Environmental Emergency Action Committee to live up to expectations, as it is the coordinating body for interventions that address environmental issues in the area.

Reacting to the development, the Councillor representing Alor Ward 1 in the Idemili South Local Government Council, Hon. Clinton Obi Ngige, said Mayor Ilogbenu’s move to tackle environmental degradation was a welcome idea, stressing that an unclean environment poses health hazards.

# The Mayor of Orumba South Local Government Area, Hon. Shedrack Azubuike, has congratulated Miss Onwugamba Ogechi, a beneficiary of his scholarship scheme at FCE(T) Umunze, on her outstanding performance at the South East Zonal Academic Staff Union of Colleges of Education (COEASU) competition, where she emerged overall winner.

Miss Ogechi, who represented the Federal College of Education (Technical), Umunze, scored 39 points to secure first position at the zonal competition held at Ebonyi State College of Education, Ikwo, on September 29, 2026. 

The Mayor commended her dedication, resilience and commitment to academic excellence, noting that her achievement has brought honour to her family, the College and Orumba South.

Hon. Azubuike urged Ogechi to remain focused and continue to pursue excellence in her academic journey, while encouraging other students across Orumba South to emulate her dedication and take their studies more seriously.

He stressed the importance of education and urged students to make effective use of every opportunity available to improve themselves and contribute meaningfully to society.

The Mayor further wished Ogechi success as she prepares to travel to Abuja on October 11, 2026, to receive her prize and represent the South East zone at the national championship. 

# The Mayor of Awka South Local Government Area, Prince Chinedu Okafor, has approved the appointment of veteran broadcaster and public speaker, Mr. Cyril Okonkwo, as his Chief Press Secretary.

Cyril, who has about 15 years’ experience in broadcasting and media, has worked with several radio stations, including Silverbird/Rhythm FM Awka, Love FM Enugu and Ogene FM Awka, where he built a reputation as a broadcaster and public affairs communicator.

Popularly known on radio as “Itoro,” Cyril is also a public speaker and has been involved in broadcast journalism, on-air presentation and public communication over the years.

His appointment is part of the initial appointments approved by the Awka South Local Government Council under the leadership of Mayor Prince Chinedu Okafor, aimed at strengthening the administrative structure of the council, improving coordination and enhancing service delivery.

Other appointees include Sir Peter Uyanwune, Secretary of the Awka South Local Government Council; Hon. Chukwunenye Maduka, Supervisor on Security; Mr. Emmanuel Nwonwu, Works Supervisor; Mr. Ferdinand Okoli, Chief of Staff; and Pharm. Henry Iloh, Senior Special Assistant on Health and Emergency Response.

The Mayor congratulated the appointees and charged them to discharge their responsibilities with integrity, professionalism, diligence and commitment to the development of Awka South.

# The Mayor of Idemili South, Hon. Oluchukwu Ilogbenu has hit the ground running with an immediate inspection of blocked drainages, refuse dumps and other environmental challenges across the council area.

The Mayor personally went round to assess the situation on ground, paying particular attention to drainage channels obstructed by refuse and other materials, as well as areas where accumulated waste requires urgent attention.

The inspection was not merely a routine tour. It provided the Mayor with an opportunity to see firsthand the environmental conditions confronting residents and identify areas that demand immediate intervention.

With blocked drainages capable of obstructing the free flow of water and indiscriminate waste disposal posing sanitation concerns, the Mayor’s early attention to these issues places environmental cleanliness among the immediate concerns of the new administration.

Residents and communities across Idemili South can expect further steps aimed at improving sanitation, clearing obstructed drainage channels, evacuating refuse and maintaining a cleaner environment.

# In a decisive move to restore public order, Governor Chukwuma Soludo has convened a high-level stakeholders meeting at the Light House, Awka, to address the protracted conflict between the Umuoba Anam and Aguleri communities.

The peace summit brought together traditional rulers, Presidents-General, and community leaders from Aguleri, Umueri, and Anam. Also in attendance were traditional rulers from the Anambra South and Central Senatorial Districts, the Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, and key government officials.

Opening the deliberations, the Governor decried the tragic loss of lives and the widespread destruction of properties, emphasizing that such lawlessness is entirely unacceptable to the administration.

To ensure compliance, the Governor directed security agencies to maintain a robust, round-the-clock presence in the affected zones, reassuring all parties that the government remains firm, fair, and uncompromising in its pursuit of lasting peace and justice across the state.

Community leaders, including Igwe Michael Idigo and Hon. Fidel Okafor, strongly condemned the hostilities, specifically highlighting the tragic killings of a minor and an unarmed person from Umuoba Anam, alongside the retaliatory destruction of the revered Idigo Palace. Both leaders were however united in a call for an immediate cessation of violence and the swift delivery of justice.

# The Mayor of Njikoka Local Government Area, Dr. Ikechukwu Okakpu has intervened in the escalating leadership dispute in Enugwu-Agidi following credible security intelligence indicating a potential threat to the town secretariat.

In response, the Njikoka Local Government Council promptly alerted relevant security agencies and deployed personnel to the secretariat to safeguard the facility, prevent unauthorised access and avert any possible damage to public property.

The Mayor subsequently summoned representatives of the two factions involved in the dispute for an emergency meeting and arbitration.

During the meeting, one faction claimed to have obtained a court judgment recognising its position, while the other faction said it had not been served with the judgment and therefore could not accept the claim.

However, as neither faction was able to produce the said judgment before the Council, no administrative determination could be made on the matter at this stage.

Consequently, the Enugwu-Agidi Town Secretariat has been placed under the temporary custody of the Njikoka Local Government Council and will remain closed to both factions pending clarification of the legal position.
