# The Anambra State Urban Water Assets Holding Corporation (ASUWAHC) has unveiled a comprehensive strategy aimed at strengthening water production, distribution and service delivery across the state as part of renewed efforts to provide residents with safe, reliable and sustainable potable water.
The resolutions were reached during a technical meeting on the operations and management of water supply schemes convened by the Officer-in-Charge of the Corporation, Mrs. Emmanuella Okafor, where management reviewed the corporation’s core mandates, assessed operational challenges and outlined key actions to improve performance across all water schemes.
Speaking during the meeting, Mrs. Okafor, urged them to intensify oversight of water production and distribution operations while ensuring timely submission of weekly operational reports. She noted that improved reporting, effective supervision and accountability would enhance operational efficiency and guarantee sustainable water service delivery across the state’s water schemes.
She further directed scheme managers to ensure prompt repairs of leakages on primary and secondary pipelines, stressing that every water scheme should operate with a clearly defined distribution timetable to guarantee equitable water supply to residential, commercial, industrial and public institutions.
The meeting also reaffirmed ASUWAHC’s commitment to maintaining high standards of water quality through regular laboratory testing and strict compliance with national and international drinking water standards. Management disclosed plans to strengthen the Corporation’s Water Safety Plan and build the capacity of technical personnel through specialised training to ensure the continued supply of safe and potable water.
The meeting further emphasized routine maintenance of water treatment plants, boreholes, reservoirs, pumps, pipelines and other critical infrastructure, with contractors and vendors directed to respond promptly to maintenance needs in order to minimise service disruptions and ensure uninterrupted water supply.
# The Traditional Ruler of Owerre-Ezukala in Orumba South Local Government of Anambra State, Igwe Ambassador Thomas Ogbonnaya, has performed the 2026 “Otute” Festival of the community, during which he conferred chieftaincy titles on thirteen illustrious sons and friends of the community.
Performing the functions at Ichichi square where Owerre-Ezukala Civic Center is located, Igwe Ogbonnaya, who is the Chairman of Orumba South Traditional Rulers Council, called on his subjects to remain united in working for the progress and development of the community, and condemned criminality of any kind in the area.
Describing Owerre-Ezukala as among the communities very important to his ministry and the state government because of its tourist attractions, the Anambra State Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, Barrister Udorji Amedu, noted series of meetings with the community leaders aimed at the development of the “Owerre-Ezukala cave and waterfall”, adding that the state government is preparing to commence construction of core infrastructure to help in the development of the sites, and called on the chieftaincy title recipients to remain worthy of their new status and continued supporting community development.
In his remarks after chieftaincy title conferment, the President General of the community, Engr. Johnbenson Onyeaso, who described the 2026 event harvest of renewal and restoration, called for collective efforts in developing the community, while Chief Onyeka Orji, on behalf of other chieftaincy title recipients, thanked the community for finding them worthy of the honor, and promised to redouble efforts in community development.
Traditional Rulers from communities in the local government area, members of the political class, religious leaders attended the event that featured masquerade and cultural displays.
# The Mayor of Dunukofia Local Government Council, Chijioke C. Ozumba joined the women of Nawgu and Ukwulu communities in their respective 2026 Community Meetings, commending them for their resilience, unity and invaluable contributions to family and community development.
The Mayor, who was accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Okwuchukwu Ozumba, attended the Nawgu Meeting at the Community Primary School Field, before proceeding to Ukwulu, where the women gathered at the Community Civic Centre.
The visits formed part of the Mayor’s ongoing engagements with the women of Dunukofia during the 2026 Community August Meetings. Within the past week, he had also graced the Community August Meetings of Umudioka and Umunnachi, where he similarly commended the women and made the same call for greater attention to education, moral upbringing, environmental sanitation and community security.
Addressing the women in Nawgu and Ukwulu, Mayor Ozumba described them as indispensable partners in building peaceful, progressive and morally upright communities. He praised their resilience and pivotal role in nurturing families, preserving cultural values, promoting peace and contributing to the socio-economic development of their communities.
He urged the women to use the August Meeting period to renew their commitment to raising responsible children and building stronger communities, stressing that the future of Dunukofia depends significantly on the values instilled in children at home.
The Mayor particularly called on mothers and women leaders to ensure that all children, especially the girl-child, remain in school and are given every opportunity to acquire quality education. He noted that educating children is an investment not only in individual families but in the future of the entire community.
He also charged parents to place greater emphasis on discipline, integrity, respect and good character, urging mothers to teach their children respect for elders, culture and tradition. He stressed that academic education must go hand in hand with proper moral upbringing if the society is to produce responsible future leaders.
# The Community Women Leader of Oba Community in Idemili South LGA, Anambra State, Adaife Ngozi Onwuka has been re-elected as President General Oba Women Patriotic Union (Inyom Oba).
In her Presidential address themed ‘Nyee aka dozie obodo anyi bu Oba’ meaning ‘Help in Rebuilding our community Oba’, Adaife Ngozi Onwuka during the Inyom Oba 2026 August General Meeting called on all sons, daughters and stakeholders of Oba to put aside differences and work together for the collective development of the community.
She expressed gratitude to the women of Oba for renewing their trust in her leadership team. She pledged to consolidate on the gains of her previous tenure by prioritizing women empowerment, girl-child education, health sensitization, and support for vulnerable families.
Adaife Onwuka also emphasized the need for peace, discipline, hardwork and active participation of women in politics saying that gone were the days when women stay idle as housewives without generating any form of resources to help out in the family.
The newly re-elected Women Leader further appealed to the Traditional Ruler, Igwe Oba, the President General, and other community stakeholders to partner with the women’s wing in executing people-oriented projects. She encouraged women to embrace skills acquisition and small-scale businesses to improve household incomes and reduce poverty.
# The Anambra State Ministry of Information and Value Reformation and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have agreed to deepen collaboration to tackle drug abuse and promote value reorientation among youths in the state.
The agreement was reached during a courtesy visit by the Principal Training Officer, Training/Media & Advocacy of NDLEA, Mrs Priscilla Onyema, to the Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr Law Mefor, at his office in Awka.
Dr Mefor said the renaming of the ministry to include value reformation by Governor Chukwuma Soludo was deliberate, given the growing moral decay as seen in the rising cases of drug abuse, especially crystal meth, locally known as mkpuru mmiri, among youths in Anambra, describing the trend as a clear and present danger to society.
“The drug is synthetic, it is cheap, and it is evil. It destroys an individual completely, making rehabilitation extremely difficult. Virtually every community in Anambra is affected,” he said.
The commissioner expressed concern over the moral decay affecting youth, overshadowing Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s achievements in infrastructure, health, and education, as many youths are being ravaged by drugs.
He explained that Soludo’s value reformation agenda has been broken into four areas: anti-drug abuse, anti-cultism, moral and behaviour reformation, and general value reorientation, and that a technical committee is already in place and working on a blueprint to guide the statewide campaign and enforcement.
Dr Mefor said the ministry was ready to collaborate with NDLEA to expand sensitisation across schools, communities and media platforms. “We need each other in this campaign. We need NDLEA to pursue the added mandate of value reformation. He asked, “How can we broaden and intensify it to tackle the issues comprehensively?”
Dr. Mefor said he would formally invite the NDLEA’s Alternative Development team to Anambra to work out further collaboration with the anti-drug agency.
He envisioned the program as an inter-ministerial project involving Information, Youth and Sports, Women Affairs, Health, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, town unions, and community leaders.
In her remarks, Mrs. Onyema said NDLEA has adopted a balanced approach of enforcement and advocacy, and has reached over 170 schools across Anambra LGAs in the last three years.
Mrs. Onyema also introduced the NDLEA’s new Alternative Development Directorate, which seeks to empower youths willing to quit drug trafficking and provide support to vulnerable persons at risk of being recruited by dealers. She said states interested can write to the NDLEA Chairman, through the State Commander for the team to visit and enlighten stakeholders.
# The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the statutory lead agency in the protection of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure, has led other sister security agencies to carry out an on-the-spot inspection of the ongoing rehabilitation and maintenance work at the First Niger Bridge, Onitsha, Anambra State.
Commandant Maku Olatunde, the NSCDC Anambra State Commandant represented by the Deputy Commandant in charge of Operations, DCC Akaachia Godwin, together with other Service Commanders visited the bridge to assess the progress of work and evaluate potential security and traffic challenges that may arise during the rehabilitation period.
During the inspection, the NSCDC State helmsman reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to the protection of critical national infrastructure and the safety of commuters, pedestrians, and goods in transit, particularly along the designated diversion routes.
He further noted that the NSCDC will maintain close synergy with other security agencies to forestall gridlock, mitigate security threats, and ensure the free flow of both human and vehicular movement across all affected routes.
The Command disclosed that adequate personnel have been strategically deployed to key points around the bridge and along alternative routes to maintain order, deter criminal elements, and support seamless traffic management.
The Command assures members of the public of its resolve to sustain active monitoring and effective collaboration with all stakeholders to guarantee the protection of lives and property throughout the duration of the maintenance works.
# Motorists and other road users plying the Onitsha/Asaba route have called on the Federal Government to, as a matter of urgency, carry out repair works on the Harbour Industrial Layout bypass linking the Second Niger Bridge.
They said this is to ease traffic and prevent damage to vehicles due to the deplorable state of the road.
Speaking to newsmen, some commercial bus drivers shuttling between Asaba and Onitsha, lamented the bad state of the Harbour Industrial Layout link road which they described as a shortcut to the Second Niger Bridge.
The road users, while acknowledging the need for maintenance work on the First Niger Bridge, said the government ought to have fixed the alternative route before closing the bridge.
They pleaded with government to prioritize the repair of the road.
Reacting to the outcry by motorists, the Acting Federal Controller of Works in Anambra State, Engineer Emenike Timothy, and the Anambra State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Architect Okey Ezeobi, assured that the road will be repaired before the end of the day.
They pleaded with the public to bear the little stress that comes with such development, noting that good things sometimes come with temporary discomfort.
# Residents of Awka have commended officials of the Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) for their daily early morning sanitation operations, describing their dedication as key to sustaining environmental cleanliness across the state.
The residents said the officials begin work before daybreak, accompanying ASWAMA waste collection trucks to evacuate refuse from major roads, drainages and other public spaces before the start of daily commercial activities.
They noted that the routine sanitation exercise, carried out in areas such as Zik’s Avenue, Aroma Junction and adjoining streets, had significantly improved environmental hygiene and enhanced the city’s aesthetic appeal.
Speaking with journalists, Pastor Elijah Nwosu described the sanitation workers as unsung heroes whose commitment continued to safeguard public health and promote a cleaner environment.
Mrs. Ugochukwu Chukwudi said the workers performed their duties despite exposure to offensive odours and other occupational hazards, adding that their resilience and dedication deserved public recognition.
Also speaking, Mrs. Obiageli Agu said the consistency of the sanitation exercise reflected the Anambra State Government’s commitment to environmental sustainability and the wellbeing of residents.
The residents observed that the state’s Clean and Green initiative had increased public awareness of proper waste disposal and encouraged greater community participation in maintaining a clean environment.
They urged residents to complement ASWAMA’s efforts by disposing of waste responsibly, avoiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse and protecting public spaces.
The residents also commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for prioritising environmental sanitation, saying the daily presence of ASWAMA officials underscored the administration’s commitment to building a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Anambra State.
# The women of St. Stephen Zone, Anglican Communion, Enugwu-Ukwu, gathered in fellowship for their August meeting, with a strong charge to trust God and obey His Word.
The guest speaker, Nneora Chinyere Ofornakara, Mama Enugwu-ukwu Archdeacon, who was accompanied by other clergy wives, encouraged the women to look up to God in every situation.
Taking her Bible reading from Deuteronomy 28, Nneora Ofornakara emphasized the blessings of listening to and obeying God’s instructions. She urged the women to align their homes and lives with the Word of God, so that they might experience His favor, protection, and fruitfulness in this new month.
She noted that God rewards obedience and that when women stand on His Word, their families and the church will be strengthened.
The meeting featured prayers, hymns, and words of encouragement as the women were charged to begin August with faith and dependence on God.
# All is now set for the take-off of Orumba North Agricultural Institute, affiliated to Nnamdi Azikiwe University for the award of Diploma.
The Mayor of Orumba North Local Government Area, Retired Captain Casmir Nwafor, disclosed this in Awka during an interview with newsmen.
Retired Captain Nwafor also announced that the council has mapped out one hundred plots of land for Orumba North Farms, fully registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC, for practical mechanized farming and loan application as part of its laudable measures to contribute to food security.
He noted that they are presently in talks with the federal ministry of Agriculture to permit them to bring in tractors without duties as the council area is ready to go into large scale farming with its formidable agric team.
On sustainability measures, Orumba North Council Mayor, unveiled his commitment to having monthly meetings, procurement of farm equipment and implements, provision of certified seedlings and most importantly, having the coordinate of farmers farms to ensure that he is dealing with core farmers, who according to him, would be linked to the numerous agric agencies across the country for more support.
