* Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has elected four Senate Representatives for the institution’s 10th Governing Council.
According to a statement signed by Dr. Emmanuel C. Ojukwu, Special Adviser to the Vice-Chancellor (Information and Public Relations), the representatives were elected recently.
The four elected Senate Representatives are Prof. Pius V.C. Okeke (Department of Accountancy, Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences), Rev. Fr. Prof. Ken Oraegbunam (International Law and Jurisprudence, Faculty of Law), Prof. Tracie Utoh-Ezeajugh (Department of Theatre and Film Studies, Faculty of Arts), and Prof. Igwebuike Onyiorah (Department of Anatomical Pathology and Forensic Medicine, Faculty of Basic Clinical Medicine).
* The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps ( NSCDC) Anambra State Command has deployed personnel to compliment NSCDC Edo State Command and other sister security agencies in providing adequate security for the electorate as well as officials taking part in the election.
The Head of Media and Tactical Ops NSCDC Anambra State Command, SC Okadigbo Edwin, made this public in a statement released on Friday in Awka.
According to Okadigbo, the State Commandant of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Anambra State Command, Maku Olatunde said the deployment is in line with the directive of the Commandant General, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi.
* Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor says Journalists need to give Governor Chukwuma Soludo fair reportage.
Mefor while speaking during a visit by the leadership of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, at his office at Jerome Udoji Secretariat Complex, Awka on Thursday, maintained that Soludo’s achievements are under reported.
Addressing the delegation, led by the Anambra State NUJ Chairman, Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, Dr. Mefor assured of his commitment and transparency in the discharge of his duties, urged journalists to help showcase the good works of Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
* A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Onitsha, Anambra State, has granted bail with the sum of five hundred thousand naira (500,000) to the 54-year old widow and mother of a girl child; who is currently facing trial for allegedly conspiring with others to break into a building with intent to commit felony, among other 5-count charges.
With the Inspector General of Police (IGP) as complainant, Mrs Nwagbo, alongside her brother-in-law, Michael Nwagbo, aged 45, and others now at large are accused of conspiring among themselves sometime in 2020 at Onitsha, within Onitsha Magisterial District, to break into the said building with intent to commit felony, offence punishable under section 495(b) of the Criminal Code Law, CAP 36 Revised Laws of Anambra State of Nigeria 1991.
Among other charges brought against the defendants are that they criminally and unlawfully broke into the fence housing Plot No 288 Trans-Nkisi Layout Onitsha, said to be property of one Mr Obiora Ezeakabekwe, and chased away his workers who were working on the land, and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 381 of the Criminal Code Law CAP 36 Revised Laws of Anambra State of Nigeria 1991.
* The Chairman, Anambra State Sports Development Commission (ASSDC), Patrick Estate Onyedum thanked God for the success story recorded at just concluded National Youth Games (NYG) held at Asaba, Delta State.
Onyedum commended Team Anambra for being good ambassadors of the state with a total of 26 medals.
The ASSDC boss eulogized the athletes and team officials for their efforts, dedication and perseverance in achieving the feat which he described as remarkable while promising that the state will work on bettering their performance in the next outing as well as working on the male athletes as majority of the medals were won by the female athletes.
* Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor has stressed the need for the Ministry of Information to make strategic plans towards effective communication of government programs and policies.
Addressing heads of agencies under the ministry in a meeting, held in his office at the Jerome Udoji Secretariat Complex, Awka, the commissioner called on the agencies to work towards developing appropriate messages that will communicate the numerous achievements of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s administration to all the nooks and crannies of the state and beyond.
Dr Mefor further disclosed that he’s planning to organize a Strategic Communication Committee that will help develop appropriate messages with which they will reach out to Ndị Anambra by getting people outside the state.
* The campaign council of Sir. Paul Chukwuma, a governorship aspirant of All Progressives Congress (APC) for next year’s governorship election in Anambra has raised the alarm over the level of insecurity in the state.
The council blamed the state governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo for the insecurity in the state, saying it’s principal, Paul Chukwuma would tackle it when he wins the election.
The Director General of the council, Hon Ifeanyi Ibezi in a press conference in Awka told journalists that the insecurity in the state has become alarming, and that it forms part of why Chukwuma was contesting as a replacement for the incumbent.
* The Medical and Dental Consultant Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) has protested what it considered a deliberate exclusion of members from contesting for the position of the Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
MDCAN in her Communique issued at the end of its Emergency General Meeting (EGM) rejected and condemned insertion of some criteria which did not consider the peculiarities of their career progression path.
The Communique which was made available to journalists in Awka on Friday was signed by Dr. Victor Modekwe and Dr Sunday Oriji, MDCAN-NAUTH Chairman and Secretary respectively.
It observed that the advert required that an applicant for the position of VC-NAU must possess a first degree, Master’s degree and a PhD.
* Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Professor Ngozi Chuma-Udeh has described the distribution of the cutting-edge Science Laboratory Equipment to public secondary schools in the state as a historic event that will enhance the practical teaching and learning of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, STEM, Education.
Professor Chuma-Udeh represented by Mrs Chinyelu Nwachukwu, stated this at Capital City Secondary School, Awka where representatives of the benefitting Schools were in attendance to receive the equipment.
The Resource Officer of the private firm that supplied the equipment, Dr. Uchenna Ezeogu disclosed that the firm carried out a NEEDs assessment of the 224 public secondary schools in the state and found out that 94 % of these schools have laboratory structures but deficient in equipment, and the remaining six percent has structures but no laboratory equipment hence the procurement and distribution of the laboratory equipment by the state government.
* The Labour Party in Anambra State has expressed strong confidence in the Senator Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee established to reposition the party.
The Anambra chapter, led by Peter Okoye, in a four-point resolution from its state executive committee meeting in Awka, commended and appreciated the efforts of their dedicated leaders, His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi and H/E Dr. Alex Otti, the Executive Governor of Abia State, for their relentless work in repositioning the party for greater achievements in Nigeria’s political landscape.
The communiqué, read by Comrade Jerry Nnubia, Secretary of the State Transition Committee, congratulated the newly constituted 29-member National Caretaker Committee under the chairmanship of Senator Esther Nenadi Usman.
