# The Anambra State Police Command, through its Safe School Operatives, in collaboration with concerned members of the community, has rescued nine persons following a flood incident along the Nibo–Isiagu Road, Awka.
The incident which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday 22nd September 2026, when some school children and adults were caught up in the flood while travelling along the affected route.
SP. Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Command, in a press statement noted that upon receiving information about the incident, the Safe School Operatives swiftly mobilised to the area and, working with members of the community, rescued seven school children and two adults and moved them to safety.
“One additional child involved in the incident are still unaccounted for. The Command has consequently activated sustained search and rescue operations in the affected area.
“The search operation is being conducted in collaboration with community members and relevant stakeholders and will continue until the remaining persons are located and accounted for.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has directed that the search and rescue operation be sustained and expanded. He also urged residents of the area, particularly those living or operating around the affected route, to provide the Police and other responding agencies with any information that may assist in locating the missing persons.
The Command further urges parents, guardians, school authorities and motorists to exercise extreme caution around flooded roads, bridges and waterways, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall. Parents and guardians are also advised to ensure that children do not attempt to cross flooded or otherwise dangerous routes.
The Anambra State Police Command remains committed to the protection and safety of school children and will continue to strengthen collaboration with communities and relevant agencies under the Safe School Initiative to prevent avoidable loss of lives during emergencies.
# Prof. Oby Lilian Orogbu, Member representing Awka North & South Federal Constituency, visited Central Primary School, Nibo, to inspect the ongoing renovation of the five‑classroom block.
The project marks a significant step in improving educational infrastructure within the constituency.
The roofing of the classroom block has already been completed using durable sheets designed to serve the school for many years.

# The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama is participating in the Inspector-General of Police’s Conference and Retreat on the theme, “Developing a Nigeria Police Roadmap for Effective Management of Security During Elections,” being held in Imo State from 21st to 23rd September 2026.
The conference and retreat is focused on strengthening the preparedness, coordination and professionalism of the Nigeria Police Force in providing a safe and secure environment for electoral activities ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

# Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra, OCHA Brigade, says its responsibilities extend beyond routine street enforcement to include the enforcement of environmental, sanitation and public-order regulations across the state.
This is according the Acting Managing Director, Mr Anthony Agbaefuna, who in a press statement restated the organization’s readiness to fully implement the laws setting it up.
Mr Agbaefuna explained that under the Anambra State Environmental Management, Protection and Administration Law 2024, the Brigade is empowered to facilitate the arrest and prosecution of persons involved in illegal street trading and hawking, construction of structures on drainages, walkways and water channels, indiscriminate refuse disposal, unauthorised defecation and urination, vandalism of government property and other environmental offences.
He added that the Brigade is also responsible for enforcing compliance with monthly environmental sanitation, ensuring the cleanliness and desilting of gutters and drainages, controlling overgrown vegetation around residential and business premises, and collaborating with relevant government agencies on environmental matters.
The Acting Managing Director further listed the statutory responsibilities of the brigade to cover maintaining order around markets, addressing activities that cause road gridlock around market areas, enforcing payment of applicable state levies and tackling illegal revenue collection while calling for public cooperation and support to help in achieving the objectives of environmental protection and public order.
# The Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA) has conducted HIV and other disease tests for workers at Naira Rice Industry aimed at ensuring the safety of the area.
The programme led by the Executive Director of ANSACA, Dr. Nkem Okeke saw his team test the workers and their management for HIV, tuberculosis and screened them of HepatitIs B and C, put them through HIV prevention protocols as well as encouraged them to know their status.
Speaking to journalists after the programme, Dr. Okeke said that a work place deserves a healthy workforce as workplaces where one could easily contract HIV disease if not properly screened, will put many lifes at risk.
According to him, anywhere the agency found people to be HIV positive, they will be linked to sustainable care, saying that Governor Chukwuma Soludo has directed ANSACA to begin a massive sensitzation and awareness across all the work places in Anambra, and to achieve this task, ANSACA will sign a memorandum of understanding with the Ministries of Environment and Entertainment in coming days so that the agency will be fully integrated into all the places as necessary for it to deepen sensitzation and awareness.
The ANSACA boss assured that after the agency has conducted the HIV test on Naira Rice workers,they will convey the results appropriately with high level of confidentiality and professionalism to the clients and issue the company a certificate compliance showing that the place has been certified by ANSACA as a healthy workplace,even as he urged business owners, entrepreneurs to collaborate to collaborate with them to ensure a healthy workplace in Anambra.
In his remarks,the Chief Executive Officer of Naira Rice, Mr Arinze Omenwa described the programme as a well thought out initiative and appreciated Governor Chukwuma Soludo and ANSACA Boss, Dr. Okeke for their commitment to eliminating HIV in the state.
# The Solution Continuous Team has pledged to support the Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare with its time, resources and volunteer services towards improving the welfare of residents and making the State more livable.
The team, led by the Special Senior Assistant on Political Matters, Office of the Deputy Governor, and State Coordinator of the Solution Continuous Team, Mr. Ofojebe Chinedu, made the commitment during a courtesy visit to the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Chinyere Esther Onyekesi, on Thursday.
Ofojebe said members of the team were ready to voluntarily contribute their resources and integrate themselves into government programmes and activities, stressing their determination to play a meaningful role in the development of Anambra State.
Responding, Commissioner Onyekesi appreciated the team for the visit and commended its members for their spirit of volunteerism and civic responsibility.
She assured the team of her maximum support and cooperation, noting that partnerships with committed citizens and groups would strengthen ongoing efforts to advance the welfare of women, children and vulnerable persons across the State.
# Nigerian youths have been urged to participate actively in elections by voting and protecting their votes, rather than staying away from the electoral process on the grounds that their votes do not count.
A youth leader in Amorji Ihite, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, Mr Chinanu Okoli, made the call while speaking on the need for increased youth participation in elections as a way of contributing to national development.
Mr Okoli, who regretted that many Nigerians, especially youths, no longer believe that their votes count and have consequently resorted to boycotting elections, said staying away from the electoral process was not the solution, and urged the people to always come out en masse during elections to vote for their preferred candidates and protect their votes to ensure that their choices are properly counted and recorded.
He attributed the perception that votes no longer count in Nigerian elections to what he described as dishonest and manipulative practices by some politicians during elections in Nigeria, urging political actors to desist from such practices, which he said undermine the credibility of elections and negatively affect the image, progress and democratic development of the country.
As part of this initiative, the Command participated in a Peace Advocacy Walk with police personnel and other stakeholders from Eke-Awka Roundabout, Awka, to mark the 2026 International Day of Peace and reinforce the message of peaceful coexistence, responsible citizenship, tolerance and non-violence.
The CP further notes that the Command will, in the coming days, intensify engagements with political stakeholders, traditional and community leaders, youths, civil society organisations and other relevant groups on the need to reject violence, intimidation, hate speech, destruction of property and other acts capable of threatening public peace before, during and after the elections.
The Commissioner of Police reassures the people of Anambra State that the Command will remain professional, impartial and firmly committed to protecting the rights and safety of all citizens, while enforcing the law against anyone who engages in criminal conduct, irrespective of status, political affiliation or other considerations.
# Women representatives from the seven local government areas of Anambra Central Senatorial Zone have declared their support for the senatorial candidacy of Hon. Ferdinand Dozie Nwankwo.
Leading the women, Hon. Njideka Oraedum, who spoke at the Hon. Ferdinand Dozie Nwankwo Centre for Development and ICT, said the senatorial candidate had been a source of support and joy to many women for over two decades, both before and during his tenure as a member of the House of Representatives.
She said the women had resolved to support Nwankwo throughout the campaign and vote for him on election day.
Oraedum described Nwankwo as a philanthropist of exceptional character who had used his legislative position and personal resources to improve the lives of his constituents.
Also speaking at the event, the Mayor of Anaocha, Hon. Rome Ibekwe, commended the women for their endorsement and urged them to remain committed to taking the Onyendozi message to the grassroots.
Ibekwe described women as key pillars of societal development and stressed the need for increased participation of women in politics.
Similarly, the Mayor-elect of Njikoka Local Government Area, Hon. Ikechukwu Okakpu, commended the women for their unity and support for Onyendozi’s candidacy.
He urged them to intensify their grassroots mobilisation and promote the message of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, across the senatorial zone.

# ‎The Mayor of Dunukofia Local Government Council, Chijioke Ozumba, has urged women in Nawgu and Ukwulu communities to prioritise education, responsible parenting, environmental sanitation and community security.
‎The visits were part of his administration’s ongoing engagement with women across Dunukofia during the 2026 Community. He had earlier attended similar meetings in Umudioka and Umunnachi.
Addressing the women, Ozumba described them as critical partners in family and community development, commending their resilience, unity and contributions to the social and economic advancement of their communities.
