* Anambra State Labour Party governorship aspirant, Valentine Ozigbo, has urged citizens to reject Governor Chukwuma Soludo in the upcoming 2025 election.

Ozigbo expressed concerns that granting Soludo a second term could destabilize the state, citing the deteriorating security situation and the pervasive fear among residents.

Ozigbo accused Soludo of using the state’s House of Assembly to pass laws aimed at undermining opposition parties in the forthcoming local government elections.

In a statement posted recently via his X handle, Ozigbo, who was previously a governorship candidate under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), advised the Labour Party to remain resilient and field strong candidates for the council elections.

* The Nigeria Union of Mine Workers (NUMW) Anambra state chapter, has warned illegal miners disrupting the programme of the state government to steer clear of all approved mining sites or be ready to face the wrath of the law.

The NUMW which is an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) also commended the Governor Chukwuma Soludo for reviewing the suspension of every mining activities in the state.

The chairman of NUMW Anambra Chapter Comrade Kelvin Onyah said the warning has become necessary to keep illegal miners away from any form of incursions into approved mining sites by the state government and for guaranteed safety of environment.

* The Managing Director of Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) Brigade, Comrade Celestine Anere has issued a stern warning to traders against street trading this season.

Anere while speaking in Awka issued a warning to residents of the state against indiscriminate dumping of wastes, open defecation and urinating in unauthorized places.

Comrade Anere while issuing the warning on behalf of the state government, reminded the public of the laws prohibiting open defecation, street trading and urinating in public places such as parks and walkways

 

* Suspected gunmen has attacked and bombed the Oba Police Divisional Headquarters in Idemili South Local Government Area, Anambra State.

A police corporal was killed in the incident, while others sustained varying degrees of injury. The hoodlums also attacked the Oba Civic Centre. Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement.

* Master Akachukwu Okonkwo, of Enu-Orji Village, Enugwu-ukwu, 6 years, male, is missing.

He was last seen at Ukwulu where he lives with his grandmother on Thursday 22/8/24, when he left home to an unknown destination.

Akachukwu is dark in complexion, about 2 ft tall and speaks Igbo language fluently.

* The Anambra State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Maku Olatunde has stressed the importance of heightened discipline and exceptional operational performance among personnel serving in the state, urging them to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and excellence in their duties.

Maku Olatunde made this declaration during a muster parade held at the NSCDC State Command Headquarters in Awka on Tuesday, September 3rd, 2024, in compliance with a directive from the Commandant General, as he addressed personnel and emphasized the need for enhanced discipline and operational excellence.

* Anambra Governor’s wife, Nonye Soludo, has asked those living in flood-prone communities in the state to immediately move to higher grounds following national predictions that flood is imminent.

The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), recently identified 31 including Anambra as states with high-risk areas for significant flood impacts in 2024.

The affected local government areas include: Anambra East, Anambra West, Ihiala, Ogbaru, Ayamelum, Awka North, Onitsha North, Onitsha South, Ekwusigo and Idemili North.

 

* The Acting Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi, on Tuesday inspected the ongoing second-semester examinations across various Faculties and Departments.

During her visit, Prof. Arinze-Umobi reiterated her administration’s unwavering commitment to ensuring a smooth and conducive learning environment for all students.

The Acting VC also took the opportunity to admonish students to uphold academic integrity by avoiding any form of examination malpractice.

* The family of Ebuka Obiorah from Enugwu-Aguleri in Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State has accused the Anambra State Command of killing their son at the Awkuzu Police Station.

The family vowed to challenge the death of their son, Ebuka Obiorah, in police custody in court.

According to Obiorah’s family, they have already briefed their lawyer because the death of their son, who was healthy and should not have died in police custody, is one death too difficult to bear.

Awkuzu Police Station, formerly the headquarters of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), appears to be fast regaining its unenviable status as one of the most dreaded police stations in the country following recent events.

* The Editor-in-Chief of Fides Newspaper,
Mr. Jude Atupulazi has advised students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, stating that the school environment is not conducive for them to live with the opposite sex in their hostels.

Atupulazi warned that such behaviour can lead to a bleak future, urging the students
to avoid engaging in unofficial marriages while on campus.

Atupulazi, who spoke recently as a keynote lecturer at a programme organized by the Association of Mass Communication Students (ASOMAC), identified campus romance as a significant distraction facing many students.
