# The Naval Outpost, Onitsha, has arrested two suspects, including an alleged naval impersonator and a suspected armed robber, during separate operations at the Awkuzu Checkpoint in Anambra State.
The suspects have been handed over to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Awkuzu, for further investigation and necessary action.
One of the suspects, 37-year-old Brooms Anthony from Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, was arrested for allegedly impersonating a naval personnel and possessing a fake identity card.
The second suspect, 36-year-old Christian Ogbole from Onoh Village in Eziagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, was arrested in connection with an alleged armed robbery.
Briefing journalists, the Commanding Officer, Naval Outpost Onitsha, Commander Kabir Yusuf, said Anthony was intercepted at about 2:00 a.m. while travelling from Lagos to Enugu in a Nissan Atlas truck with registration number EPE 288 YM, loaded with household items.
According to him, the arrest followed a report by a trader whose shop had allegedly been burgled, with several items stolen by unknown persons.
Commander Yusuf said a Suzuki mini bus with registration number RNN 573 XA was later sighted approaching the Awkuzu Checkpoint at high speed.
He explained that security operatives gave chase after the vehicle allegedly failed to stop when flagged down.
The pursuit eventually led to the interception of the vehicle and the arrest of Ogbole, while other occupants reportedly escaped and are still at large.
Items recovered from the suspected robbery vehicle included six solar batteries, one rechargeable solar fan, two solar lights, one controller, one disco light and solar cable wires.
The recovered items, which were identified as stolen property, have since been handed over to their owner.
Other exhibits recovered from the vehicle included two pry bars, three mobile phones, four car keys, 10 litres of petrol, assorted rubber slippers and one power bank.
Commander Yusuf said the arrests were part of the Nigerian Navy’s efforts to support other security agencies in tackling criminal activities and ensuring the safety of lives and property.
He said the operation demonstrated the commitment of the Nigerian Navy and other security agencies to combating crime and ensuring that criminals have no safe haven to operate.
The Naval Outpost Onitsha commander assured residents that the Navy would continue to collaborate with the Police and other security agencies to protect lives and property across the state.
The two suspects, the Suzuki mini bus and other exhibits have been handed over to the RRS, Awkuzu, for further investigation, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
# In preparation for the forthcoming visit of the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to Anambra State on Thursday, 10th September, 2026, Service Commanders of all security agencies in the State held a strategic Security Operational plans Harmonization Meeting at the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Awka.
The meeting was convened to harmonize operational arrangements and ensure a hitch-free visit.
Key issues deliberated upon include inter-agency synergy for effective crowd control, traffic management, and VIP protection; deployment plans for personnel across all venues; intelligence gathering and threat assessment within the metropolis; as well as logistics and communication channels among security agencies.
Following the meeting, the Service Commanders embarked on an on-the-spot assessment of designated venues for the visit. The delegation inspected the Old Government House, Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, and the Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS).
During the inspection, critical areas such as access points, parking arrangements, emergency exit routes, and the overall security architecture of each location were assessed. Relevant observations and recommendations were noted for immediate implementation.
At the end of the deliberations and inspection, it was resolved that all security agencies will operate under a unified command structure for the duration of the visit. Adequate personnel will be deployed to all venues ahead of time. Visible diversion pointers and traffic control measures will be put in place to ease the movement of commuters. There will also be continuous liaison with other stakeholders, including the State Government, to ensure seamless coordination.
Meanwhile, a follow-up visit was conducted on Monday, 8th September, 2026, to other designated places including the Chinua Achebe International Airport, Umueri; Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square Awka, Nwagu Agulu; Federal Polytechnic Oko and PHC Amawbia/Old Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia. The visit had in attendance Deputy Commandant Akaachia Godwin, Head of Operations Department, who stood in for the State Commandant.
The NSCDC State Commandant, Commandant Maku Olatunde, stated that the joint meeting and venue inspection are aimed at ensuring the safety of the First Lady, other dignitaries, and citizens during the visit. He assured that all security arrangements are in top gear to guarantee a peaceful and successful event.
# The Youth Wing of the Anambra State Town Unions Council (ASTUC), led by its National President, Comrade Ken Okoli, has recognised outstanding role models drawn from the ten communities in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The honourees were recognised for their contributions to community service, rural development, humanity and the advancement of their respective communities.
The community role models, who were nominated from the ten communities that make up Anaocha Local Government Area, attended the event at Neni Town Hall with supporters who identified them as their role models based on their legacies and contributions to their families, communities and society at large.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of Anaocha Local Government Area, Hon. Rome Ibekwe, commended the ASTUC Youth Wing for its efforts at youth re-orientation and for encouraging young people to channel their energies towards positive and productive endeavours.
Ibekwe said his administration prioritises youth development, noting that it had conducted the first and second phases of its skills acquisition programme, through which youths were trained and empowered in line with the vision of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration.
He disclosed that another skills acquisition building would be commissioned at Akweze and Neni the following week, stressing that the initiative was aimed at equipping young people with the skills needed to become self-reliant and productive.
The Mayor promised to continue to lead the youths towards the path of righteousness and encouraged them to remain focused, dedicated and steadfast in their endeavours, so as to uphold the vision of Anambra State as the “Light of the Nation.”
# Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central Senatorial District joined family, friends and well-wishers in felicitating with Rev. Sr. Dr. Marie Andrea Ifeoma Nwanosike on the Celebration of the 25 Years Anniversary of her consecration to the religious life.
In his remark at the Thanksgiving Mass held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Onitsha, Senator Victor Umeh described Sr. Andrea Nwanosike as an exemplary Nun whose life is characterized by quest for education and ambition for the service of God and the church. # Anambra woman, Mrs Ifeoma Onyemee, from Eziama village, Uli, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, has accused two operatives of Agunechemba security outfit in Uli community, Mr. Kenneth Obiwulu and Mr. AK Irobi of orchestrating plans to eliminate her husband to cover up their alleged atrocious deeds in the community.
Speaking with journalists, Mrs Onyemee said that her husband, Mr. Chimobi Onyemee, on July 24, 2026, forwarded a petition to the office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, as well as the office of the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, detailing numerous atrocities allegedly perpetrated by the duo of AK Irobi and Kenneth Obiwulu in Uli community, under the platform of Agunechemba security outfit.
Madam Onyemee regretted that instead of facing the allegations of crimes against humanity levelled against them, the security operatives came up with frivolous allegations of murder against her husband, and took him to the headquarters of Rapid Response Squad (RSS) formerly known as SARS.
Mrs Onyemee further claimed that her husband, before AK and Udo destroyed his house, was a toll collector for the government agency in charge of agricultural produce; but later joined OCHA Brigade as ad-hoc staff in Onitsha.
She also expressed worry that community leaders and government functionaries in Uli are aware of atrocities being perpetrated by AK and Udo, but have refused to speak out, probably because of fear.
# The Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA) has launched a new campus based HIV response initiative across 27 tertiary institutions in the state.
The move is targeting Adolescent young people (AYP) with intensified prevention, awareness and support services.
The initiative, known as the Campus Action Committee on AIDS (CACA), was unveiled during the inauguration of two HIV focal persons from each participating institution.
Speaking during the event, Dr. Nkem Okeke explained that CACA adds a campus level structure to Anambra’s expanding HIV response system, complementing existing mechanisms at the national, state, local government and ward levels.
The ANSACA boss acknowledged the support of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, describing the administration’s renewed commitment to the HIV response as critical to the agency’s ability to expand interventions across the state.
He maintained that ANSACA will provide training and formally inaugurate the committees to ensure that their activities align with professional and ethical standards.
The representatives comprise a member of the school authority (School Lecturer ) and a student representative.
The institutions cut across universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, colleges of nursing and schools of nursing, including government, private and mission owned institutions.
Under CACA, participating institutions are expected to establish campus committees comprising students from different departments and levels.
With the inauguration of the focal persons, ANSACA is set to commence the next phase of establishing and strengthening CACA structures across the 27 institutions.
# The Anambra State Government’s “Operation Zero Shanties” is gaining momentum, with more illegal structures and shanties in Nnewi and its environs demolished and cleared by the state government through the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.
The exercise follows a directive from Governor Chukwuma Soludo as part of efforts to actualise his urban regeneration agenda.
Led by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Barrister Chijioke Ojukwu, the Ministry’s team began the exercise with the demolition of an illegally built three-storey structure at Akaboukwu, Nnewi, before proceeding to Umudim, Okpunoeze Junction, and Uruagu, where other illegal buildings and shanties were cleared.
Speaking during the exercise, Commissioner Ojukwu said it forms part of the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to restoring order, ensuring compliance with physical planning regulations, and creating safer, cleaner, and more sustainable communities across Anambra State.
# Sir James Louis Okoye a former Catholic Knight of St John International who reportedly denounced Christianity during the official opening ing of Our Lady of Assumpta Catholic Church, Nnewi in January over non-recognition of late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah has been arrested.
Okoye, also known as Ebube Anaedo was arrested by local vigilante in Nnewi after he was seen on Saturday wearing red dress with fresh palm frond in between his lips, with a bell in hand performing what he believed was the ritual cleansing of Nnewi land on the streets of the town.
Okoye gained popularity in January, during the official consecration of the Nnewi Catholic Cathedral, where he decried the non-recognition Late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who he believed built the cathedral to almost completion before his death.
Since then, very little has been heard of him until Saturday, when he was reportedly arrested.
A short video showing Okoye siting on the floor and being interrogated in what looked like a vigilante office, the former knight of the church said he was engaged in a cleansing exercise for Nnewi land because the community had been desecrated.
He insisted he had done nothing wrong by engaging in the cleansing, insisting that he was doing it for the good of Nnewi town.
# Fire gutted a duplex at Mopol Base Junction, along the Old Amansea-Awka Road in Anambra State, on Saturday evening, with firefighters from the Anambra State Fire Service swiftly mobilising to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjoining properties.
The fire outbreak was reported to the Fire Service following which its personnel and firefighting equipment were immediately deployed to the scene.
According to the Media and Publicity Unit of the Anambra State Fire Service, the affected property comprised a duplex with a boys’ quarters apartment, while a shuttle bus was also parked within the compound.
The firefighters, on arrival, commenced containment and extinguishing operations, eventually bringing the fire under control before it could spread to neighbouring properties.
Although no life was lost and no injury was recorded, the incident, according to the State Fire Service, affected parts of the building, including the roofing materials, household furniture, sections of the walls and other structural components. The shuttle bus parked within the premises was also reportedly affected by the fire.
A preliminary assessment by the Fire Service indicated that the blaze was caused by a power surge.
# The National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) will on October 15 deliver judgment on the matter between Prof. Chike Osegbue vs Prof. Kate Omenugha and five others over her appointment as the substantive Vice Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University(COOU), Igbariam.
This followed the oral addresses and adoption of written processes by parties in the suit on Tuesday.
Osegbue in suit marked NICN/ARJ/275/2025, is asking the court to nullify the Aug. 6, 2025 appointment of Omenugha as the substantive Vice Chancellor of the Anambra government owned University.
Other respondents in the matter are Gov. Soludo Chukwuma Soludo, Attorney-General of Anambra, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, the COOU Council and the University itself.
Osegbue is praying the court to declare him the substantive vice-chancellor having finished first in the selection process and recommended by the university’s governing council to the governor who is the visitor for appointment.
Mr J.S. Okutepa(SAN), Counsel to Osegbo argued that the appointment of Omenugha was in flagrant disregard to the law of the University and due process as exercised by the selection committee under the then Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu.
Okutepa who was represented by Kaine Anawune said the Claimant did not complain to the Visitor or the Vice Chancellor because they were responsible and beneficiary of the injury he was seeking remedy for.
He prayed the court to dismiss the objections of the defendants and declare that he be appointed Vice Chancellor in line with the Law of COOU.
