Turkey: Ex-Real Madrid player, Mesut Ozil “quits” football after contract termination

Mesut Ozil, a former Real Madrid player, is said to have given up football after his contract was for the second time in a row cancelled in Turkey.

Ozil had successful runs with Real Madrid and Arsenal earlier in his brilliant career, but this season he was slogging it out in Turkey with Istanbul Basaksehir of the Super Lig. The 34-year-old left Fenerbahce, which ended his contract by mutual consent at the conclusion of the previous season, and joined Basaksehir last summer on a one-year deal with an option to extend it.

Ozil was hoping to get his career back on track with Basaksehir, but it’s been claimed by sports reporter Yakub Cinar that the midfielder’s contract has been ended prematurely by the club after making just seven appearances.

And the alleged decision has prompted Ozil to tell his team-mates that he’s retiring, the reporter added. Ozil’s supposed exit comes after Manchester United flop Adnan Januzaj joined Basaksehir on loan following an ill-fated spell in Spain with Sevilla.
