Two dead after gunmen attack Ebonyi NDC candidate’s convoy

Two suspected political thugs were killed and several people injured on Thursday when armed men attacked the convoy of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Rollins Offia Nwali in Ebonyi State, security sources and the candidate said.

The attack occurred in the afternoon as Nwali’s convoy returned from Amazekewe community in Ezza South Local Government Area. Assailants allegedly armed with AK-47 rifles and pump-action guns opened fire on the vehicles.

Security operatives attached to the candidate engaged the attackers in a gun battle after securing Nwali and his team. One suspected attacker, identified by a source as Jude Nwamgbada, was killed at the scene. Another later died in hospital. The identities and political affiliations of the deceased could not be independently verified.

Nwali confirmed the incident in a statement, saying his Toyota Hilux was set ablaze.

“My motorcade was attacked today by armed hoodlums who opened fire on our vehicles while we were returning from Amazekewe. My Toyota Hilux was set ablaze and completely burnt in the attack,” he said.

“Thankfully, we are all safe, and I sincerely appreciate the professionalism and gallantry of the security agencies who ensured our safety.”

The candidate expressed regret over the loss of life and urged youths not to allow themselves to be used by politicians.

“No political ambition is worth the life of any young person, and no young person should have to lose their life in pursuit of another person’s political ambition,” Nwali added. He said the attack would not deter him from seeking to serve his constituency.

Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer SP Joshua Ukandu confirmed the incident. He said the command received a distress call around 4 p.m. on Oct. 22 about disturbances in Amaezekwe community.

“Operatives were dispatched to the scene, where four individuals with gunshot wounds and a burnt vehicle were seen. One individual was confirmed dead at the hospital, while 3 are receiving treatment,” Ukandu stated.

Following the violence, Ezza South Local Government Chairman Chinedu Mkpuma banned all political gatherings in the area without prior authorisation from his office.

In a statement on Friday, Mkpuma said the measure was necessary “as a precautionary measure to safeguard lives and properties, maintain public order, and prevent further security breaches.” He warned that violations would attract appropriate legal action.
