Hollywood filmmaker and actor Tyler Perry said he has no intention of getting married, pointing to what he called a “divorce pandemic” that has left many successful people financially ruined.
The 57-year-old, who has never wed, made the remarks while appearing as a guest on The Jennifer Hudson Show this week to promote his new Netflix film Why Did I Get Married Again?, which premiered on September 9.
Perry explained that his decision stemmed not from a lack of belief in love but from a desire to protect the assets he has built over his career.
“I’m never marrying. and it’s actually the divorce pandemic that is happening. Everybody that I know that is doing well went broke because of divorce,” he said.
He added that advancing age had changed his outlook.
“It’s time to slow down a bit, enjoy more time with my son and just take it all in,” Perry said.
The director shares an 11-year-old son, Aman, with his former partner Gelila Bekele, with whom he was in a relationship from 2009 to 2020.
Perry also revealed plans to move to Puerto Rico at the start of 2027 with his son and significantly reduce his Hollywood workload.
Despite rejecting marriage for himself, he said he still believes in love and partnership, just not in a formal legal contract at this stage of his life.
