The Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Giants Progressive Club has conferred the prestigious title of Grand Patron on Professor Stephen Uchenna Ufoaroh during its 2026 Annual Convention held in Enugu, in recognition of his exemplary leadership, mentorship and commitment to societal development.
Angel Network News (ANN) reports that the two-day convention featured the screening and induction of prospective members, while the second day witnessed the official robing and installation of Prof. Ufoaroh as Grand Patron, alongside the club’s annual meeting and a social get-together.
Speaking at the event, the President of the Club, Comrade Emmanuel Opurum, said Prof. Ufoaroh was carefully selected for the honour because of his outstanding contributions to education, leadership and community development. He expressed confidence that the distinguished scholar’s wealth of experience would provide valuable guidance and help reposition the club for greater impact.
Comrade Opurum explained that the UNIZIK Giants Progressive Club is made up largely of former student leaders of Nnamdi Azikiwe University who distinguished themselves in various leadership positions while on campus.
According to him, the membership spans across different parts of the world and includes former Students’ Union Government executives, Directorate of Transportation leaders, Faculty Presidents, departmental leaders and other student stakeholders who made meaningful contributions during their time at the university.
He noted that the club, established in 2023, is committed to supporting its members while giving back to Nnamdi Azikiwe University and the wider society. He disclosed that the association has earmarked ₦1 million for the overall best graduating student at the forthcoming university convocation, while some members will also sponsor individual awards at the departmental level to recognise outstanding academic performance.
Responding after his installation, Prof. Ufoaroh, who is also the President General of the Ifite-Dunu Town Union, congratulated members for their unity and shared vision, urging them to translate ideas into measurable impact. He emphasized the need for stronger internal cohesion, leadership development, innovation, entrepreneurship, integrity and community service.
Speaking on the convention theme, “From Vision to Impact,” the Grand Patron called on members from diverse professional backgrounds to leverage their experiences for collective growth, mentorship and sustainable development. He also commended the association for its support to students, departments and the broader Nnamdi Azikiwe University community.
Prof. Ufoaroh assured members of his commitment to advancing the ideals of the club and encouraged them to remain focused on initiatives and projects that would positively impact society.
