UNN Taps Adichie, Global Scholar As Visiting Professor To Boost Academic Profile

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka has named acclaimed author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and two prominent economists as visiting professors, in a bid to elevate its international standing through enhanced research and mentorship programmes.

The appointments, effective immediately, were confirmed by the institution’s vice-chancellor, Professor Simon Ortuanya, via letters dated December 18, according to a university statement.

Adichie, celebrated for her novels and essays that explore themes of feminism, identity and African culture, will contribute to the faculties of arts and humanities.

“Her Visiting Professorship will add immense value to our academic community through lectures, scholarly engagements, and the mentorship of students and young academics,” the university said in its announcement.

Professor Kevin Chika Urama, a senior executive at the African Development Bank with expertise in development economics, climate policy and evidence-based decision-making, joins to bolster economics and related fields.

Meanwhile, Professor James Robinson from the University of Chicago, renowned for his research on political institutions, governance and economic growth, will focus on political economy and development studies.

University spokesman Inya Agha Egwu described the moves as part of a broader strategy to attract world-class scholars.

“The University of Nigeria was founded to be a globally competitive institution. These appointments represent a significant step towards reclaiming that legacy and enhancing the university’s global relevance,” Egwu said in a statement issued on December 24.

He added that the roles would foster knowledge sharing, international partnerships and the integration of theory with practical policy applications.

These latest appointments mark the fourth set of visiting professorships announced by UNN this month, underscoring its push for academic excellence on the world stage.
