US to grant visas to Flavio Bolsonaro after reported flight from Brazil

A senior US State Department official said on Tuesday that the Trump administration will issue visas to Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro and his family, after media reports that he left the country following his defeat in the presidential election.

The development came a day after Brazil’s Supreme Court ordered Bolsonaro to surrender his passports as part of a money-laundering investigation. Bolsonaro has denied any wrongdoing and said on Monday that he would remain in Brazil to lead the opposition.

Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, lost the October 25 presidential run-off to incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva by more than 4.4 million votes.

Lula criticised the reported departure, saying: “This is what the Bolsonaro family is like. Brazil is their second nation, the US is their first.”

Bolsonaro initially refused to recognise the election result and said he would seek its annulment. His party later issued a statement accepting the outcome.

US President Donald Trump questioned the vote, telling reporters it “looked like another rigged election”. No evidence of electoral irregularities has emerged, and Lula’s victory was described as commanding.
