Nine senators from the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party and All Progressives Grand Alliance have defected to the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The move was announced in the Senate chamber on Thursday after letters from the lawmakers were read during plenary.
The defectors include Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Binos Dauda Yaroe, Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo, Lawal Adamu Usman and Augustine Akobundu from the PDP; Ireti Kingibe, Victor Umeh and Tony Nwoye from the LP; and Enyinnaya Abaribe from APGA.
Most of the senators cited prolonged internal crises in their former parties as the reason for switching allegiance.
The Senate, however, gave Abaribe one week to reconsider his decision, citing constitutional provisions on cross-party movement.
