Peru, a fresh rendition of the Nigerian artist Fireboy DML’s 2021 hit song, was released in December of that same year. The British singer Ed Sheeran is featured in the new version, which is still being produced by Shizzi.
The Peru music video reached 10 million views on YouTube within 7 days of its release, making it Fireboy’s most popular and trending music video. The song was the first from Nigeria to top the UK Shazam charts in January 2022.
In a recent interview, Ed Sheeran discussed how his collaboration with YBNL’s Fireboy DML, an Afrobeats artist, is the biggest Afrobeats single in the world and the best-selling record in the UK. Some Nigerians were offended by the disclosure made by Ed, especially Wizkid FC, who believes “Essence” to be the biggest Afrobeats record.
