WC 2026: England Held to Goalless Draw by Resilient Ghana in Massachusetts

England were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Ghana in their opening 2026 FIFA World Cup Group L match, despite dominating possession against a defensively disciplined opponent.

Thomas Tuchel’s side controlled the game at Boston Stadium but failed to break down the Black Stars‘ deep block, with Harry Kane missing a notable chance as the Three Lions had to settle for a point.

England enjoyed 78 percent possession and created several opportunities, particularly late in the game, but Ghana’s organised defence and physical approach frustrated their attacking efforts throughout the 90 minutes.

Tuchel praised the Ghanaians’ performance after the match. “Credit to them. I rarely saw a physical performance like that from a team,” the England boss told BBC Radio 5 Live. “They defended with 10 players in a deep, deep block… You cannot lose your head about it.”

England captain Harry Kane echoed the manager’s assessment while highlighting the positives. “We had loads of possession… We wanted the win but we got a point and we’re still in a great position in the group,” Kane said.

Ghana winger Antoine Semenyo was proud of his team’s display. “We defended for most of the game. We knew it would be like that. We needed to stay in our shape and put our bodies on the line,” he told the BBC.

The result leaves Ghana needing at least a point in their final group game against Croatia to secure qualification for the last 32, with ANN analysts describing the draw as a reality check rather than a disaster for the African undergods.
