Abia State escaped the widespread electricity blackout that hit Nigeria following a recent grid collapse, thanks to its independent control over key power infrastructure, Governor Alex Otti said Wednesday, as he touted innovative plans to transform organic waste into energy sources.
The southeastern state remained lit while much of the country grappled with the outage, highlighting what Otti described as tangible advancements in local energy management.
“I’m sure you are all aware of the recent power shortage, but Abia State was not affected because a whole part of our power asset is within our authority,” Otti told reporters.
“This shows that we are making real progress,” he added.
Otti outlined ambitions to repurpose waste for sustainable power, stating: “All the organic waste we are disposing of will be converted into energy to power many places.”
The comments come amid Nigeria’s recurrent grid failures, which have sparked public frustration and economic losses, underscoring disparities in regional energy resilience.
