The White House launched a 24/7 streaming channel on Monday, the same day CNN, MS NOW and Politico filed a federal lawsuit challenging President Donald Trump’s decision to bar them from the White House.
A new channel, born from a media war
The stream, titled “Trump TV: The Essentials Station,” went live on YouTube and the White House website, offering what officials described as unfiltered footage of the administration’s biggest moments.
Its official description reads: “Watch the Trump Administration’s biggest moments all in one place. Top videos, major remarks, and must-see highlights streaming 24/7 and updated in real time. Stay informed and stay up to date!”
The channel opened with footage of Trump’s July 3 speech at Mount Rushmore, and the White House’s social media account posted a poster reading “Streaming 24/7” to mark the launch.
The ban that triggered the fight
The launch followed Trump’s Friday announcement banning CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House “effective immediately,” accusing them of publishing “FICTION and LIES.”
“Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, warning that “other Fake News Media Outlets” would follow.
Networks sue, call the ban unconstitutional
CNN, MS NOW and Politico filed a federal lawsuit on Monday, describing the ban as a “blatant violation” of the First Amendment. CNN had earlier said its reporters remained inside the White House complex despite the announcement.
“We have a right under the U.S. Constitution to do that reporting without hindrance or interference from the government,” CNN said in a statement, adding that a ban, “should it go ahead, would be an illegal assault on that fundamental and constitutionally-protected right.”
Politico issued a similar statement, saying it would “vigorously defend” its First Amendment rights.
Major networks suspend pool coverage
In response to the ban, ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN and Fox suspended their shared pooled footage of presidential events, a decades-old system that lets a small rotating group of journalists cover the president on behalf of the wider press corps. The White House has also introduced a page on its website naming outlets it accuses of producing inaccurate or biased coverage.
