The White House has reaffirmed the United States government’s official position that there are only two genders — male and female — under President Donald Trump’s administration.
In a post on its official X account on Saturday, the White House declared: “It is the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders: male & female.”
The statement reinforces an executive order signed by Trump on January 20, 2025, titled “Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government.”
Under the order, the president declared that “it is the policy of the United States to recognise two sexes, male and female.” It defined sex as an individual’s “immutable biological classification as either male or female” and stated that sex is not synonymous with gender identity.
The directive instructed federal agencies to adopt these definitions in interpreting and applying federal laws and policies. Agencies were ordered to remove official statements, policies, regulations and communications considered inconsistent with the administration’s position, and to ensure that official forms listing an individual’s sex offered only male or female options.
The executive order formed part of broader efforts to reverse measures introduced under former president Joe Biden that recognised gender identity in various areas of federal policy.
The latest White House statement reiterates the administration’s stance on an issue that continues to generate political and social debate in the United States.
