The Nigerian Police Force has explained why it arrested Bristol Isaac Tamunobiefiri also known as PIDOM famous for operating an X handle notorious for leaking sensitive government documents.
Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Police Force in a statement on Saturday said the PIDOM was arrested his hotel room in Port Harcourt, Rivers State in a well coordinated action by the police National Cybercrime Centre.
Adejobi, an Assistant Commissioner of Police said PIDOM was arrested over involvement in leakage of government documents.
The Police spokesperson said PIDOM was arrested on 5th of August.
He added that operations of PIDOM was undermining integrity of government operations.
A statement on Saturday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi explained: “In a well-coordinated effort, officials from the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) apprehended Bristol Isaac Tamunobiefiri, also known as PIDOM, on allegations of committing serious offenses that undermine the integrity of government operations. The arrest took place on August 5, 2024, in his hotel room Rivers State.
There are several allegations levelled against the suspect, including unlawful possession, leakages of classified documents, cyber related offences, and others. We will do due diligence in carrying out thorough investigation into the cases.
“The force will leave no stone unturned to continually enforce the law and bequeath to Nigerians a more secure nation.”
Some have also accused Tamunobiefiri of using his X handle, @PIDOMNIGERIA to spread fake news and refusing to budge when he was corrected.
There have been speculations over his fate on the social media following his disappearance on the social media.
However, a journalist, David Hundeyin had on Thursday revealed that he was arrested by the police on the instruction of the National Security Adviser.
There were also documents circulating on the internet indicating that the police is ready to grant PIDOM administrative bail.
However, Hundeyin said on Friday that police have agreed to arraign PIDOM in court and some activist and lawyers are getting ready to ensure that he will be granted bail upon his arraignment
