Why Senate Approved Extra ₦9tn for 2026 Budget

Senate has approved an additional ₦9 trillion to the 2026 national budget, raising the total to ₦68.323 trillion, to meet emerging priorities and close funding gaps in key sectors.

The upward review followed formal requests from the executive arm after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu initially presented a ₦58.4 trillion proposal to the National Assembly in December 2025.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, Olamilekan Adeola Solomon, explained the decision after the budget’s passage.

“The upward review became necessary following formal requests from the executive arm to accommodate emerging national priorities and address funding gaps in key sectors of the economy,” he told Senate correspondents.

He added that part of the increase was needed to avoid disruptions in ongoing projects. “Part of the increase was necessary to prevent disruptions in ongoing projects as the 2025 budget cycle winds down,” Solomon said, noting that implementation delays had created urgent funding gaps.

The adjustment was made after detailed joint scrutiny by both chambers of the National Assembly. The executive had submitted supplementary proposals that lawmakers considered essential for the year’s economic objectives.
