According to Jacob Mudenda, Speaker of the National Assembly, Zimbabwe continues to back Russia despite its invasion of Ukraine and takeover of a portion of its neighbor’s land.
Recent referendums were held in the seized portions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia in the south and the separatist eastern areas of Donetsk and Luhansk in Ukraine.
The Ukrainian government and its allies blasted the surveys as fraudulent.
Mudenda recently visited Russia to reciprocate a visit by Moscow officials to Harare. Russian news outlet RIA Novosti reported him as saying:
Zimbabwe was and will remain on Russia’s side even after the referendums in Ukraine.
Zimbabwe was on Russia’s side even before the referendums in terms of understanding the root causes of the current situation.
Zimbabwe and Russia are both victims of sanctions and that makes us comrades in the sanctions battle.
To the extent that we are victims of sanctions, we share with Russia the same consequences of sanctions.
So it is not surprising that Zimbabwe is on Russia’s side.
Zimbabwe has not officially recognised the new regions joining Russia after the referendums but Mudenda said the process has already been initiated at Cabinet level.
