Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum on Wednesday paid a working visit to the Diffa Region of Niger Republic to strengthen collaboration in the fight against insurgency along the Nigeria–Niger border.
The visit, which included a high-level security and economic delegation, focused on joint patrols, intelligence sharing, and consolidating gains recorded in clearing insurgents from parts of the Lake Chad basin. Diffa, about 17 kilometres from Damasak town in northern Borno, currently shelters thousands of Nigerians displaced by Boko Haram.
Governor Zulum was received by his Nigerien counterpart, Brig.-Gen. Mahamadou Bagadoma, alongside senior regional officials. Both leaders later held closed-door talks on boosting cross-border security and stabilising insurgency-affected communities.
Speaking after the meeting, Mr Zulum said the improved security situation would be leveraged to enable displaced farmers’ return to farmlands around Dutchi town in the Lake Chad basin.
“Enhanced cooperation between Nigerian and Nigerien forces will help end cross-border insecurity and promote socio-economic recovery in our communities,” Zulum stated.
In his remarks, Governor Bagadoma praised Zulum’s visit, assuring Niger’s continued commitment to initiatives aimed at restoring lasting peace across the region.
