…Narrates how ASUU strike delayed him dor two years
Anambra Central Senatorial Candidate under the Young Progressive Party (YPP), Dr Chinedu Umeadi says the first two bills he will sponsor if elected to the 10th assembly will be against Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) strikes in Nigeria.
Umeadi while speaking with Journalist in an interview at his campaign office in Awka, narrated how he was delayed by ASUU for two years as a medical student. He lamented about the last strike action in the educational sector where students lost nine months.
He revealed that the strike can be tackled through engaging with various unions and agreeing with them on the way forward to make sure this actions are thing of the past in Nigeria.
In his words; “The strikes have caused alot of damages in Nigeria. I graduated two years after I should have graduated from school because of strikes. Right from when I was at Nnamdi Azikiwe university, starting to Abia Ztate University, two years was added to my medical training and am still upset about it.
“When you have a strike, people derail. I have seen good girls and boys go bad during strikes. I have seen young girls go into prostitution and young guys into drugs. It a terrible and worse thing that can happen to any student.
“If am elected a senator, there are two bills that I will sponsor. If I can achieve those two, I have achieved everything I will like to achieve in my life as a senator.Â
“Putting up a law that prohabites strike action in the universities and hospitals, doctors association. There’s going to be a discussion about this. you can’t just go and say no strike without have discussion with the unions. that will be unfair because they have a reason for going strike.Â
“We will sit and review the whole strike actions. It’s usually about payment and money. We will need to have an agreement on a regular way for incrament. It may be based on inflation rate
