IGP Disu Bans Police From Unauthorised Social Media Content Creation

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has ordered a crackdown on officers engaging in unauthorised activities on social media platforms, threatening dismissal and salary forfeiture for violators.

In an internal circular dated June 22, 2026, Disu prohibited serving personnel from creating videos, live streaming, posting skits or monetising content on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and similar platforms while identifying themselves as police officers.

The directive, marked “Restricted – For Official Use Only,” expressed concern over the “growing and most disturbing trend” of officers producing such content without approval.

“I am directed by the Inspector-General of Police to draw the attention of all Commands, Formations, Departments and Units to the growing and most disturbing trend of police officers and men creating and publishing videos… while in police uniform or in circumstances that identify them as members of the Nigeria Police Force, without lawful authority,” the circular stated.

It highlighted issues including officers posting in uniform for entertainment, self-promotion and financial gain, commenting on official matters without authorisation, and undermining public confidence in the Force.

Violators face severe sanctions including immediate interdiction, forfeiture of salary, demotion, dismissal and possible criminal prosecution under laws such as the Nigeria Police Act 2020 and the Cybercrime Act.

Senior officers will be held vicariously liable for subordinates’ breaches, with Commissioners of Police and other supervisors required to monitor compliance, organise sensitisation and submit reports within tight deadlines.

“The Nigeria Police Force is a disciplined institution whose effectiveness depends on public trust, institutional integrity, and the professional conduct of every officer. The Inspector-General of Police is committed to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and will not tolerate conduct that undermines the image and operational effectiveness of the Force,” the circular added.

Officers currently running related content accounts have 14 days to deactivate them or sever links to their police identity. The Force Intelligence Bureau and Professional Standards Department will monitor platforms for compliance.

The directive takes immediate effect nationwide.
