China has unveiled a lifelike underwater robot modelled on a golden arowana fish that can swim autonomously and avoid obstacles without following a pre-set path.
The BG-5 Golden Dragon Fish, developed by Boyagongdao Marine Technology Group, was displayed at the 2026 China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS) at Beijing’s Shougang Park.
Weighing about 3 kg, the robot measures 640 mm in length, 204 mm in width and 90 mm in height. It can operate at a maximum depth of five metres and reach a top speed of 0.6 metres per second.
Unlike conventional underwater drones that rely on propellers, the BG-5 uses a flexible, multi-joint tail made of seven segments. The tail generates a wave-like motion that closely mimics the swimming action of a real fish.
According to Chinese outlet Jimu News, an exhibition staff member said the robot does not need to follow a pre-programmed route. Its onboard sensors detect surrounding objects and enable it to change course automatically.
This capability could prove useful in underwater environments where conditions shift rapidly and continuous human control may not be practical.
The design follows biomimetic robotics principles, drawing on natural fish movement to navigate areas where traditional vehicles may struggle, including shallow or narrow spaces.
Boyagongdao has also developed a more advanced version, the BG-5V, equipped with path planning, task allocation and formation control features that allow multiple robots to operate together and cover different areas simultaneously.

The company previously collaborated with a military unit on another biomimetic underwater robot known as ROBO-SHARK.
