The senator representing Anambra Central district Sen. Uche Ekwunife says she is in support of the decision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in removing subsidy.
Ekwunife while answering questions from reporters on Saturday June 3 2023 after a town hall meeting with Anambra Central stakeholders in Awka, called for the increment of minimum wage.
” Incidentally, all the presidential candidates said they will remove fuel subsidy immediately. I support the removal of fuel subsidy but the president must look into the minimum wage.
“Minimum wage should be increased as a matter of urgency for civil servants and other public servants to meet up with the challenges that the removal of fuel subsidy will through up and i hope government will use the money saved from removal of fuel subsidy to provide basic infrastructure like power, improve security, road, educational facilities, health care and also open up micro finance for SME’s to thrive.
Speaking on her next move after leaving the Senate, Ekwunife said “I will wait for Gods direction. I will go back to my private practice. I am a chartered accountant. I consult for companies, MDG’s, I audit people’s account.
” I have no regrets. Am a fulfilled politician. I am very happy. Some people keep asking if am going to retire. How can I retire when Obasanjo has not retired. Am still young and very active in politics. I enjoy politics and will continue to play politics.
” I don’t think I will miss any thing at the Senate because in the past four years, I intensively and aggressively served my people in all ramifications both in terms of bills, motions, attracting projects and empowerment.
“The only thing I will miss is the voice on the floor and the opportunity to continue the good works I have been doing for my people.
” I am very grateful to God, to the people of Anambra central and to my husband for standing by me all through.
” I decided not to go to court after the election because i needed to rest. You must not win all the time. Senate is not do or die. Once your objective is to serve, why are you fighting to serve them.
“If am not proud of what I have done for my people, I will not call for this town hall meeting because I will be ashamed. But am proud of my performance.
In her address earlier during the townhall meeting while speaking on her achievement, Ekwunife said,
” Today, I look back at events with a sense of fulfilment that I have, in spite of the challenges, strived and succeeded in impacting on the lives of our people. I could not have been a Senator without your support and we could not have achieved what we achieved without your prayers and encouragement. I am eternally grateful.
“I can proudly say that I and my team redefined constituency representation. I was able to sponsor 30 Bills and move 18 Motions.
“I thank God almighty for the grace and privilege to serve the people of Anambra Central Senatorial District. It is indeed an honour to have held the position I occupy today in trust for millions of Ndi Anambra.
