The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Anambra Chapter, has raised concerns regarding the deteriorating state of the Awka Township Stadium.
Angel Network News (ANN) reports that the association issued a communique signed by Chimezie Anaso and Ikenna Nwokedi, the Chairman and Secretary respectively after its congress in Awka,
Expressing disappointment, SWAN highlighted the collapse of the football pitch, completed in December 2021, mere three years after its construction, alongside the disused tracks and the dilapidated pavilion, which urgently require rehabilitation.
SWAN called upon both the State government and the contractor to engage in discussions aimed at resolving these issues promptly. Additionally, the Congress urged the State Government to prioritize the completion of various stadium facilities, including the installation of an electronic scoreboard, floodlights, and the construction of a second pavilion, to provide Awka City with a fitting sports arena.
In its endorsement of the second edition of the School Sports Festival, a flagship program of the Anambra State Sports Development Commission, SWAN commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his support for the sports sector.
However, it emphasized the need for increased and timely funding to enable the Commission to identify and nurture future sporting talents, urging Governor Soludo to take proactive measures in this regard.
Reaffirming its commitment to collaborating with the Anambra government, corporate organizations, and individuals to promote sports, SWAN also reiterated its call for the proper constitution of various sports associations to ensure the regularity of sports programs and activities within the state.
