* As part of measures to end an already lingering crisis, residents of Housing Estate Fegge, Onitsha, have appealed to Anambra State Government to take over ownership and control of the Ugborimili Primary School in the area. The residents made the appeal during a protest in Fegge, where they expressed their grievances about how things are going in the school, especially as it concerns its stringent Management that have denied the residents access to the school premises. The protesters, who marched round the various streets in the community, were seen bearing placards with various inscriptions that help capture and drive home their grievances, the message, and their appeal some of the inscriptions read: “Ugborimili Primary School is a Public School, not a mission school”, “Prof. Charles C. Soludo, Please, Don’t Allow This Error to Continue in this Your Tenure”, “Ugborimili Primary School Field Remains the Only Field for Sports and Exercise for Housing Communities and It’s Environs”, among others.
* The traditional ruler of Ugbene Community in Awka North local government area, Igwe Samson Chimakwa, cabinet chiefs, members of the community has officially handed over Comprehensive Secondary School Ugbene to the government of Anambra State. The handover ceremony took place at the school’s premises with students and teachers of the school, representatives of Post Primary Schools Service Commission and Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board in attendance. Governor Chukwuma Soludo said the handing over of the school to the state government will bring the total number of secondary schools in Anambra State to 268.
* Chairman Anambra Sports Development Commission, Chief Patrick-Estate Onyedum says as at the close of registration, about 756 primary and secondary Schools have indicated interest to participate in the 2024 edition of the festival. The games that will kick off on May 2 and end on June 7 shall be in three categories of Under-13, Under-14 and Under-18 at community, local government area, senatorial district and state levels. Onyedum while speaking on Tuesday at a pre-competition press conference for the 2024 edition held at the government house Awka, maintained that the preparation for this year’s National Youth games in Asaba, Delta State has started and that the young and raw talents that will be discovered from the festival will constitute up to 85% of Anambra team to the games.
* The Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze has extolled Governor Chukwuma Soludo for being the first Governor in Nigeria to create employment opportunities for civil servants through the employment of five thousand teachers and three hundred health officers in his first seven months in office. Felicitating Anambra State workers on behalf of the State Legislature as they join their counterparts in celebrating this year’s workers’ day, Rt. Hon. Udeze who celebrated the workers’ day with Ogbaru workers, described the State workforce as one of the best in the country in view of the numerous achievements and honours civil servants in the state have continued to record.
* The National Coordinator of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Media Warriors Forum, Chinedu Obigwe, has accused the lawmaker representing Awka 1 constituency, Henry Mbachu of
politicizing security issues in Awka, the Anambra State capital. He said the lawmaker’s action should be condemned by all right thinking minds. Mbachu had recently circulated a video broadcast where he claimed that over 34 youths were killed in the state capital within three weeks. The lawmaker wondered why such level of insecurity should exist at the state capital that houses top security personnel, including the governor as the the chief security officer of the state.
Reacting to Mbachu’s action in a statement on Sunday, Obigwe said, “My stand remains that security is everybody’s business and all hands must be on the deck to tackle it but it is not by what Henry Mbachu did.Proffering solution to insecurity is not by going live on social media to play emotional blackmail politics.
* The people of Amanuke community in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State have protested and appealed the urgent intervention of the government over the leadership criss in the community and the surprised disappearance of two lister generators donated to the town by MTN. The people, during the protest, held over the weekend, also indicted the some individuals in the community in the said disappearance of the generators. They further lamented that the criminal incident has strangulated the economic life of the town.
* The Provost, Federal College of Education (Technical ) Umunze, Prof. Theresa Okoli has warned the matriculating students of the institution to desist from cultism, examination malpractices, fraudulent and criminal activities and other anti social vices that could jeopardise their academic activities in the college. The Provost who handed the warning during the 35th/13th Joint matriculation ceremony held art the institution over the weekend, however reminded all the fresh students that their admission in the institution was strictly on merit and more reason to be serious with their studies.
* The traditional ruler of Obosi community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Igwe Chidubem Iweka III, have praised the outgoing State’s Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye on his retirement from the force after 35 years in service and 10 months in charge of Anambra State police Command. Speaking at the ceremony, Eze Iweka the 3rd, described CP Adeoye as a man principled with well deserved honours and outstanding performances during his career in the Nigerian police service.
* The Anambra FA Chairman Gen. Chikelue Iloenyosi has charged both teams representing the state at the national level to bear witness to the state both on and off the pitch as the President Federation Cup gets to round of 64. Solution FC and Edel FC are in action wednesday and thursday. The Chairman made this known when he visited Solution FC in their team hotel in Benin as the Solution boys get set to tackle Shooting Stars of Ibadan for a place in round 32. He reminded them of the importance of Cup competitions as he insisted that in football anything is possible is more evident in Cup competitions.
