# The Anambra State Government is stepping up efforts to establish a comprehensive Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management Policy to address the high cost of sanitary

products, inadequate toilet facilities in schools and limited menstrual health education.

The proposed policy received a boost when the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs Esther Onyekesi, pledged the ministry’s full support for its adoption and implementation.

Mrs Onyekesi gave the assurance in Awka during an advocacy visit by the Development Centre for Orientation, Discovery and Empowerment (DeCODE), led by its Executive Director and Coordinator of the Anambra Menstrual Health Advocacy Coalition (AMHAC), Mrs Cynthia Enweonwu-Arinze.

The Commissioner described the proposed policy as a long-awaited initiative and assured the delegation of the cooperation of the ministry’s management and relevant departments in facilitating the necessary government procedures.

“I’m already in. It’s what I want. When somebody brings something you’ve been clamouring for, what do you do? Support with 100 per cent. You have my support 100 per cent,” she said.

She also expressed optimism that the policy would eventually receive the approval of Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

Making a case for the policy, Mrs Enweonwu-Arinze said menstrual health required a coordinated government response rather than isolated interventions, particularly to address the challenges confronting schoolgirls and other vulnerable women.

She cited a situation assessment conducted by DeCODE under its Menstrual Ease for Girls (ME4Girls) Project across 12 public secondary schools in six local government areas, involving 1,315 students.

According to the findings, 25.4 per cent of the girls had missed school because of menstruation within the preceding three months, while 83.8 per cent identified free or affordable menstrual products as their most pressing need.

The assessment also revealed significant gaps in school sanitation infrastructure, with only two of the 12 schools having toilets rated clean and safe, while just three had functional handwashing stations.

# The NDC Presidential Campaign Coordinator in Anambra State, Hon. Ifeanyi Ibezi, has named former Anambra State Governor, Dr Chris Ngige, and the incumbent Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, as the two people he regrets working with politically.

Speaking during an interview, the former House of Representatives member, who represented Idemili North and South Federal Constituency said his first regret was choosing Ngige as his political mentor, while his second was returning to APGA and supporting Soludo’s re-election.

Ibezi stated that Ngige betrayed him when he needed his support to contest for an elective position. He claimed that the former governor frustrated his political ambition to the extent that he had to be rushed to Germany for medical treatment.

He also accused Governor Soludo of denying him a fair playing ground during the recent APGA primary election, stating that he was forced out of the race despite the efforts he had made to mobilise support for the governor’s re-election and spending huge amounts of money in the process.

Further stated that if he has his way, he will ask Governor Soludo for a refund of all the money he spent in his re-election.

# A young man; Mr. Emezie Chibueze, in his late 20’s has been tortured to death at Ezinifite, Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State by local vigilante security for stealing.

Late Mr. Chibueze was accused of stealing a bunch of plantain and the local vigilante security men came and arrested him.

He was taken to their security office and tortured until he became unconscious. He was reportedly locked up for five days without food and water, later out of fear that the young man might likely die in their custody, the security men quickly returned his unconscious body to his family.

The family was said to have tried their best to save him, taking him to a hospital but he could not be saved.

# Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr. Law Mefor, has disagreed with Senator Victor Umeh over claims that former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has been endorsed as the preferred presidential candidate of Ndigbo ahead of the 2027 general election.

The disagreement dominated discussions at the Igbo Nation and Customs (INC) Political Summit held in Awka on Thursday, November 5, 2026.

The summit, organised by the Igbo Nation and Customs (INC), a grassroots membership organisation committed to the interests of the Igbo people, took place at St. Patrick’s Cathedral CWO Hall, Awka, under the theme, “Unity and Moral Values in the Political Future of Ndigbo.”

Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, had insisted in his address that Ndigbo had already endorsed Peter Obi as their presidential candidate for the forthcoming election.

He argued that it would contradict the Igbo principle of ‘Onye aghala nwanne ya’ (Be your brother’s keeper) for Ndigbo to abandon one of their own in the presidential race.

However, Dr. Mefor disagreed with the position, maintaining that no such endorsement could be considered an official Igbo position without consultations with recognised leadership institutions.

He noted that key Igbo socio-political and traditional institutions, including Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the Igbo Council of Traditional Rulers and the South-East Governors’ Forum, were neither consulted nor approached for an endorsement.

Acknowledging Senator Umeh as one of the founding members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Mefor also criticised Peter Obi’s political approach, particularly his failure to seek an alliance or merger with APGA before pursuing his presidential ambition.

He explained that Obi, who became the first governor of Anambra State elected on the platform of APGA, had established the practice of working with governments at the centre, a political approach later followed by his successor, Chief Willie Obiano, and currently sustained by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

# The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) is to begin local government sensitisation and enlightenment campaigns in Anambra State ahead of the 2027 general elections across the country.

Coordinator of the Obi/Kwankwanso Presidential Campaign Council in the state and former member of the Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Ifeanyichukwu Anthony Ibezi, who dropped the hint at a meeting with local government and ward chairmen of the party in Awka, said that the overall objective is to take the message of liberation to the wards and to the units because NDC, according to him, has come to provide a credible alternative for emancipation of the people from political servitude.

Ibezi who said that henceforth all NDC meetings would be held at the ward and unit levels, maintained that NDC is not coming to win elections alone but also to sustain it as an alternative political party in Anambra State and send the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) packing.

He said that the party will tour the three senatorial zones and twenty-one local government areas of the state to sensitise the grassroots about the forthcoming general elections as he believes that the best way to win the elections in all the polling units is to…

# The road to the 2027 general elections officially gathered momentum as the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) held its 2026 campaign flag-off rally at the Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, bringing together party leaders, candidates, stakeholders and supporters from across Anambra State.

The rally, which marked the official commencement of APGA’s statewide campaign activities, witnessed the symbolic presentation of the party’s campaign flags to candidates contesting under its platform.

The flags were handed over by Governor  Chukwuma Soludo, alongside the National Chairman of APGA, Barr. Sylvester Ezeokenwa.
