Anambra Commissioner for Special Duties, Hon. Beverly Ikpeazu-Nkemdiche
says it has conducted pre-impact assessment on flood prone communities ahead of the 2024 flooding.
Speaking in an interview in Awka on the government’s preparedness, Ikpeazu-Nkemdiche who expressed happiness over the water level of the council areas visited, revealed that the present administration understands the topography of the areas during rainy season which regularly cuts off the communities from each other, as roads being constructed in the areas are designed to stand the test of time.
She pointing out that the pre-impact assessment visit was as regard to complaints received from residents of the flood-prone communities in the state over late arrival of palliatives and accommodation and promised that the state government will ensure early arrivals of intervention this year.
The Commissioner re-emphasised that even though that Anambra is within the moderate flood risk areas, the ministry is working round the clock to ensure that the river line areas of the state are prepared to the high risk of the flood to avoid any emergencies.
Angel Network News (ANN) reports that
the former Anambra lawmaker pointed out that the ministry has engaged an interactive session with stakeholders and residents in various councils in the riverline to understand their challenges during flooding, the devastating impacts they witness, the levels of government intervention to cushion the effects of the flooding which according to her, the ministry will review and make more recommendations to ensure solution driven plans during and after the floods.
She called on residents of the areas to always be at alert and be ready to evacuate the areas if need be to ensure protection of life and property of the people.
On the issues on flooding around some urban centres, the Special Duties Commissioner frowned at residents and developers who build on waterways thereby causing heavy flooding and leads to loss of property and called for attitudinal change.
