* The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Professor Carol Arinze-Umobi has extended her heartfelt congratulations to the recent graduates of the Department of Medical Rehabilitation during the department’s 15th induction and oath-taking ceremony for the 2024 cohort of Physiotherapy graduates. Arinze-Umobi in her address, expressed shared joy with the graduands’ parents and guardians, acknowledging the arduous journey of academic studies and the significant moral and financial sacrifices made to see their children or wards through professional education. She emphasized that the celebration marks the culmination of these efforts.
* A research assistant in the Department of Anatomy at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nnewi campus, Jude Amechi Nnaka has been awarded a prestigious PhD scholarship with a cumulative offer exceeding $70,000 annually. Jude will be pursuing his doctoral studies in Anatomy and Cell Biology at the Department of Ophthalmology, Visual, and Anatomical Sciences at Wayne State University, Detroit, MI, USA, starting in August 2024. In addition, he will be working as a graduate research assistant.
* Women are special breeds created by God to transform, mould and build a nation of godliness and righteousness. The Vicar, St Michael And All Angels Anglican Church, Abagana, Rev. Canon Shedrack Obidajuo made this comments in a sermon during a thanksgiving service to mark the end of the Parish’s 2024 Women August Meeting which the theme, ‘I must eat the fruits of my labour’.
* The President General of Isiagu community, Mr. Udochukwu Nnebedum has empowered 16 petty traders with micro-credit grants and enrolled one hundred indigent residents of the community into the Anambra state Health Insurance Scheme to the tune of N2. 5 million. Nnebedum made the disbursement and enrollment during the 2024 Ogbuobodobo August meeting of the women of the town which held at the popular Afọr Isiagu market square; highlighting his commitment to promoting women’s empowerment and financial inclusion as well as the importance of good health to the progress and development of the community. Speaking while disbursing the funds and before the enrollment of the residents, the Isiagu President General, Mr Nnebedum said that the gesture is his personal contribution to the development of his town and in support of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s human capital development iniatives especially with the bitting hard economy.
* Advocacy for the establishment of anti-corruption commission and passage of audit bill is gaining momentum across in Anambra State. The most recent push is from the coalition of civil society organisations, CSOs, on Audit and Anti-Corruption in Anambra State which during an advocacy visit to the state Accountant General, Dr Chukwudi Okoli, argued that the commission and the audit bill will boost the fight against corruption in government. The visit is targeted at promoting accountability and fiscal transparency in a bid to ensure value for public funds particularly at a time the nation faces precarious economic realities.
* The member representing Idemili North Constituency in Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Sir Kingsley Udemezue attended the First Legislative Summit and Unveiling of Mace of Faculty of Arts Students Association Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. Udemezue who was the distinguished speaker/penalist was represented by his Personal Assistant, Comrade Emmandy Ezenagu who spoke on the theme “Legislative excellence: Nurturing Democracy and Enacting Change’.
* In a move to strengthen party cohesion and strategize for upcoming elections, the Anambra State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Engr. Igwe Chigozie, convened a crucial meeting with members of the State Working Committee and all 21 Local Government Chairmen. The gathering marked the beginning of a new era of collaboration and collective effort towards achieving electoral success.
As the party prepares to embark on its Local Government tour, commencing with Anambra West LG, the meeting provided a platform for stakeholders to share insights, discuss challenges, and align strategies.
* The 25th Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC) meeting has approved the award of contract for the rehabilitation of the failed sections of Ukwuaki to Ukwuorji Road, off Ifite Road, Awka, by the Anambra Road Maintenance Agency (ARMA). According to a release from the Commissioner for Information, Sir Paul Nwosu, the approval was done after
consideration of the memo presented by Engr. Obinna Nduka, MD/CEO of Anambra Road Maintenance Agency (ARMA). The job will be done at the sum of N133,076,722. 50 (One Hundred and Thirty-Three Million, Seventy-Six Thousand, Seven Hundred and Twenty-Two Naira, Fifty Kobo).
* A bill for a law to establish the Anambra State Herbal Practice Regulations Agency and for other related matters has been red for the second time at the Anambra State House of Assembly. The member representing Aguata two constituency Hon. Tony Muobike who sponsored the bill while leading the debate said their is need to create a law monitoring herbal practice in Anambra. Muobike who is the Chairman House Committee on Health, maintained that most of the herbal drugs does not specify the contents and quantities to be taken. According to the lawmaker, those taken this drugs believe whatever the herbalist tells them which is why there should be code of conduct and regulations.
* A prominent Anambra citizen and Awka stakeholder, Chief Celestine Okoye, has clarified the circumstances surrounding a viral video showing him carrying an AK-47 rifle into a public function. Okoye, a retired Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) in the Nigeria Police Force, explained that the rifle belonged to a police officer who escorted him to the event and had to leave it with him due to a sudden illness.
He denied allegations of wrongdoing, stating that he was simply holding the gun for the officer and didn’t know he was being recorded.
