Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has spoken out against the label “Queen of Afrobeats,” saying she does not accept the title despite appreciating fans’ praise, because it comes with weighty expectations and responsibilities.
Speaking in an interview with Apple Music’s Ebro, Tiwa said that there are many female artists who also deserve recognition, and she feels the title forces her to constantly uphold a standard of humility and consistency. She acknowledged that the tag likely arose because she was one of the first women in Nigeria to break through in Afrobeats.
She emphasized that while she is grateful for the recognition, accepting the title publicly doesn’t align with how she views her own artistic journey.
