Real Madrid fought back to beat Olympique de Marseille 2-1 in their Champions League opener at the Santiago Bernabéu, despite being down to ten men late in the game. Kylian Mbappé converted two penalties to secure the win for the hosts.
Marseille took an early lead in the 22nd minute as Timothy Weah capitalized on a defensive error by Madrid’s Arda Guler, finishing a through-ball from Mason Greenwood.
Real were back on level terms shortly after when Marseille’s Geoffrey Kondogbia fouled Rodrygo in the box, and Mbappé dispatched the resulting penalty.
Despite losing captain Dani Carvajal to a red card near the end for head-butting Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, Madrid held firm. Mbappé converted his second spot-kick in the 87th minute after a handball by Facundo Medina to seal the win.
