The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has announced a suspension of all boxing matches nationwide, following the deaths of two boxers within the last six months.
As reported by BBC Sport and Ghana web on Friday, the 32-year-old professional super-middleweight boxer Ernest “Bahubali” Akushey died on September 23, 2025, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, 11 days after suffering severe injuries in a bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
This marks the second professional boxing death in Ghana within six months. In March, Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju also died after a fight in Accra.
In a public statement, the GBA said the move is to allow a comprehensive investigation into medical protocols, safety standards, and officiating integrity within the sport.
The decision comes after the fatal ring exits of fighters whose identities have not yet been fully disclosed, prompting national debate over the regulation and oversight of contact sports.
