Decorated Spanish defender Jordi Alba has announced his decision to retire from professional football at the conclusion of the current Major League Soccer (MLS) season, following Inter Miami’s playoff run.
The 36-year-old left-back, known as one of the most dynamic attacking fullbacks of his generation, made the announcement via his social media accounts on Tuesday. His decision comes as a surprise to many, as he had only recently signed a contract extension with Inter Miami that was set to run through the 2027 season.
Alba’s retirement means two of Lionel Messi’s longtime teammates at FC Barcelona will be ending their professional careers simultaneously in Miami, as midfielder Sergio Busquets announced his retirement plans just a few weeks prior.
A Career Concluded with Conviction
In his announcement, Alba expressed peace and conviction about his decision to step away from the game after nearly two decades at the top level.
“The time has come to close a truly meaningful chapter in my life,” Alba said. “I do so with complete conviction, with peace and with happiness because I feel I’ve walked this path with every ounce of passion I had, and now it’s just the right moment to open a new chapter and close the previous one with the best possible feeling.”
Alba’s illustrious career was defined by his 11-year stint at FC Barcelona, where he formed an iconic partnership with Messi. During his time at the Catalan club, he helped secure six La Liga titles, five Copa del Rey trophies, and the 2015 UEFA Champions League title.
On the international stage, Alba earned 93 caps for Spain, playing a key role in their triumph at the 2012 UEFA European Championship.
Messi Pays Tribute
Alba joined Inter Miami in July 2023, shortly after Messi, reuniting the core of Barcelona’s dominant squad in MLS. The club’s management and teammates quickly offered tributes, with Inter Miami Managing Owner Jorge Mas calling Alba an “exceptional addition” and an “exemplary professional.”
Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi offered a lighthearted and emotional response to the news.
“Thanks to you, Jordi. I’m going to miss you so much. After so much together, it’s going to be weird to look to the left and not see you there,” Messi wrote, adding with a nod to their famed on-field connection: “Crazy how many assists you gave me all these years… Who’s gonna give me back passes now???”
Alba’s final matches will be determined by how far Inter Miami advances in the upcoming MLS Cup playoffs.
