University of Nigeria Senate Bans ‘Wild Celebration’ After Final Exams

  • Disorderly activities, campus littering now punishable by rustication or expulsion.

The Senate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has officially banned all forms of “wild celebration” by students following graduation or the completion of final examinations, warning that offenders face severe disciplinary action.

The decision was formalized in a memorandum issued by the Office of the Registrar (Senate Affairs Unit) dated September 24, 2025. The circular confirms that the University Senate, at its 433rd meeting, approved the inclusion of the ban in the Student’s Code of Conduct.

The University emphasized that such activities, which often lead to disruption and disorder, will no longer be tolerated.

The memo states that “Wild celebration during graduation/completion of final examination leading to disruption of peace on campus, littering the campus environment etc. should not be tolerated”.

The directive further warns of harsh penalties for non-compliance, noting that:

“Punishment for the offence ranges from rustication to expulsion”.

The circular, signed by Mr. Ebizie Charles O., the Director of the Senate Affairs Unit for the Registrar, was copied to key university administrators, including the Vice-Chancellor, Principal Officers, Deans of Faculty, and the Acting PRO.

This measure is seen as an attempt by the university administration to curb unruly behavior and maintain a conducive academic environment, which has often been challenged by the disruptive nature of post-examination celebrations.
