Members of Nigeria’s House of Representatives have sounded an alarm over a suspected plot by terrorists to bomb the National Assembly complex, calling for urgent security measures to prevent an attack.
In a motion during plenary, Rep. Bello Usman stated that credible intelligence indicated that terrorists had acquired explosive materials and made plans targeting the legislative complex. He urged security agencies to escalate protection around the area immediately.
Usman told colleagues: “The threat is real — we cannot gamble with the lives of lawmakers and staff.” The motion was unanimously supported, with calls for intensified surveillance, screening, and interagency coordination.
The National Assembly President, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, directed the assembly’s security directorate to liaise with relevant agencies and ensure that the complex is fortified. Legislators also requested the deployment of counter-terror units.
The alert comes amid rising security concerns in the capital, and underscores perennial risks facing Nigeria’s democracy institutions.
