Peter Obi Breaks Silence On Nigeria Being Tagged ‘Country of Particular Concern’ by the U.S.

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed deep concern over the United States government’s recent designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC), warning that the move and its accompanying threat of possible military action should “give every well-meaning Nigerian serious concern.”

In a strongly worded statement on Monday, Obi described the U.S. action as a wake-up call to address Nigeria’s worsening security crisis, which he said had claimed over 10,000 lives since May 2023, citing figures from Amnesty International.

“The unwarranted and unprovoked killing of Nigerians is most condemnable, and all efforts must be made to bring it to a stop,” he said, stressing that the situation “is significantly avoidable with competent leadership and governance.”

While acknowledging that Nigeria’s insecurity challenges predate the current administration, Obi accused the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government of lacking “competence, commitment, and prudent use of resources” necessary to stem the tide of violence.

“What is most unfortunate is the absence of competence, patriotism, and passion on the part of APC leaders to effectively govern and galvanize Nigeria into a nation where no one is unwarrantedly oppressed or killed,” he added.

Calling for restraint in U.S. policy toward Nigeria, Obi urged constructive diplomacy rather than confrontation, emphasizing that both countries “must work in concert and expeditiously” to restore peace and stability.

“As democracies, Nigeria and the U.S. have long been strategic partners committed to regional peace and security. That relationship should not falter,” he said.

The U.S. State Department’s CPC designation typically signals serious human rights or religious freedom concerns and may lead to sanctions or other punitive measures. The Nigerian government has since rejected the label, insisting it remains committed to protecting human rights and maintaining internal security.
