Tinubu Urges Nat’l Assembly to Legalise State Police

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on the National Assembly of Nigeria to amend existing laws and legalise state police forces, arguing the move is necessary to confront escalating insecurity across the country.

Speaking as part of a broader declaration of a nationwide security emergency, Tinubu said many states that already maintain local security outfits should be empowered to formalise them under law. “I call on the National Assembly to begin reviewing our laws to allow states that require state police to establish them,” he stated.

He emphasised that the federal government would back any state government willing to set up lawful security forces, noting the urgency of restoring safety across Nigeria.

The appeal comes amid a surge in kidnappings, banditry, and mass abductions — including recent incursions into schools — which have drawn widespread public outrage and scrutiny.
