Former presidential hopeful Peter Obi announced on Sunday his intent to run for the country’s top office in the 2027 elections, firmly ruling out any role as vice president and touting his superior experience to lead the nation amid ongoing economic challenges.
The Labour Party’s 2023 candidate made the declaration during a live discussion on X Spaces, formerly Twitter, where he engaged with supporters and addressed speculation about his political trajectory.
“Peter Obi will be on the ballot in 2027. I need your support. I need your prayers,” Obi stated, rallying his base for the upcoming contest.
The ex-governor of Anambra State underscored his credentials, claiming: “I know how to turn Nigeria around. I built my business from scratch and have more experience than any candidate, including the sitting President.”
Obi dismissed suggestions of settling for a secondary position, asserting: “I am not travelling round the world to learn governance to be Vice president.”
His remarks have ignited conversations among Labour Party loyalists and the youth-led “Obidient” movement that propelled his previous campaign, though no details on potential coalitions or direct critiques of President Bola Tinubu’s administration were elaborated in the session.
Obi’s 2023 bid, which secured third place with over six million votes, highlighted widespread discontent with established parties, positioning him as a key opposition figure in Nigeria’s evolving political scene.
